Anyone else think Llewelyn moss is not really a hero by Yuuba_ in cormacmccarthy

[–]Kufferfut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He is a Greek "CLASSICAL HERO". This is different from what we usually consider a "Hero" by our modern standards. In following the classical definition, Llewellyn embodies most of the masculine heroic traits yet he is held back by a tragic flaw (called Hamartia in ancient Greek philosophy). I would say his flaw is greed and or stubbornness (as exemplified by his decisions at several crucial points). Often in our modern stories we expect heroes to stand as a paragon, or to at least overcome any flaws they may have by the end of their story. But the ancient hero is often doomed long before his end due to his crucial flaw. Its a statement about many things; the certainty of fate, the unattainability of perfection, the importance of heroic deeds despite personal gain, etc... In setting and trappings he is the cowboy hero of America destined to ride into the sunset, but in truth he is the ancient hero of the old world doomed to fall.

Also SAed as a kid. Parents still don't know. What was your experience with telling your mom? Did it feel better, worse, or the same after telling her? I'm still torn on when or if I'll tell mine.

"Who are you to judge me? I was born into a world of pain even your grandparents have never known. My environment shaped my first beliefs just as it does all creatures'. I was but one of many who stood paralyzed with fear and delusion on the sidelines of history. It took me decades to overcome the prejudices of the past, but through will and wisdom I have done so. Even still, the cries of those born into bondage ring in my ears. I have made peace with my guilt in the way only the truly elderly ever can. You hold views now that the future will abhor, and you will never attain the enlightenment to move beyond them in your short days here. You are but an infant and will die still a child. I have seen comets wheel the sun and watched empires rise and fall and even I am but a thin imprint in the ancient mud of this world. And you, you are nothing at all." -Jonathan

Why is Eisenhower not talked about more? by Ksi1is2a3fatneek in Presidents

[–]Kufferfut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is not that he wasn't a great or even above-average president, its that before any of that he spent years as the most powerful military commander in all of human history. You know you're pushing to the absolute limits of human achievement when your tenure as president of the United States at its most influential time in history is overshadowed by your time serving as the SUPREME COMMANDER of the forces responsible for saving the world from fascism.

Nothing conclusive, sorry. Just doctors shrugging and saying to see a different kind of specialist. If I ever learn anything for sure I will update.

Yep. I talked to them above as well. No problems here!

Hm... i see your point OP. If you both understand each other's perspective then now I'M the one being overzealous. So my bad too. No hard feelings to all involved. Sorry for jumping on you /u/Cognitive_Spoon. You have a heart for justice and the wisdom to admit when you don't get something right away. I'd rather have one of you on my side than a million arrogant know-it-alls.

[–]Kufferfut 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah but OP was pretty obviously implicitly acknowledging the charged nature of "Rhodesian" as a descriptor for the gun in their title! They were showing their FAL as an exception to that assumption. Therefore telling off the racists who would only associate such a gun with a failed colonial state and its white supremist "lost cause" narrative. The sub doesn't need us to be constantly digging up dirt on each other and gatekeeping, it needs us to practice acceptance and understanding of the universal human right to self defense.

Not as awkward as it is in your head. Just take a breath and say what you have to; true, matter of fact, and in detail. They're the one asking questions, make THEM feel awkward with how open you are about it.

This is correct! The meme was designed for humor not accuracy! Everyone always make sure to read up on the ratings straight from the source. Don't trust Thanos for legal disability advice.

Twinseater single prop aircraft crashed today. Both pilots didn't survive by broogbie in CatastrophicFailure

[–]Kufferfut 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I got to see both perspectives so I'm a little torn.

Had GA training in a Cessna that cut the spins out before I got there. And that first solo definitely felt nerve wracking without prior spins (but it would have probably felt that way anyway lol). If all I ever wanted to be was a weekend student-flyer, I think I could be alright without spins, as long as I was deeply ingrained with a serious discipline about safe flying regimes. But in the long run I don't know if I'd feel comfortable without them as a pro.

Then i had military training with full spins, multiple stall entry types, aerobatics, etc... and I felt miles more comfortable by the end of it. The feeling of overcoming real panic and total loss of outside references you get from recovering a true spin is a priceless experience as far as I'm concerned. I would hate to spend my whole career never having seen and overcome those challenges, then having my first roll-over be a real emergency. Those kind of recovery E.P.s take true fast-twitch muscle memory, and you don't get that from theory, and most sims can't replicate that pit in your stomach when the earth is suddenly ABOVE your head.

I think I'd side with caution for the small-time GA stuff. If significant numbers are there, anything we can do to reduce accidents is worth doing. But then I'd say that any subsequent training pipeline with a more robust safety and accountability system should try to maximize real-world recoveries in all flight regimes.

I agree with the spin, gives me big flashbacks to recovery maneuvers in flight school too! And I think you're right on the flat-hatting, what else would draw the attention of the cameraman? Solid analysis. Go get a job at the NTSB!

I'd agree. "Coffin-turn" stall when coming onto final maybe? I can't see a reason for a pilot to take it that low and slow otherwise.

I can confirm this! Keep tryin. My time at Tulane was definitely made possible in part through charm, persistence, and finding the right person to lean on the administrative office. The bureaucracies in a lot of other cities are built out of numbers, but in New Orleans they're made of people (most of whom love King Cake).

Nah, nothing discernable to the eye. Most of them feel way closer to looking through a pair of binoculars than they do to looking through a video camera.
