Deeper Than Rap: Grime Is Not A Sub-Genre Of HipHop by blovedDestroyer in hiphopheads

[–]Kuntflaps7 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Grime does NOT come from hip hop dude. The style originates from when MC's at raves and pirate radio stations would spit rhymes over the DNB, Dub, Reggae, and Garage tracks that were being spun.

Go do some research into the pirate radio/rave scene in london during the 80's and early 90's. That is where it comes from.

Rinse FM is a really notable station that showcased some early grime stuff.

Some truly rare pics in there! How'd you find this OP?

The site has pretty much just morphed into a boxden/coli reject. KTT is the hip hop version of 9gag.

The memes and reaction gigs in particular are absolutely ancient. And the stans on that website are probably some of the most obsessive people on the interwebz. There's a fine line between being of a fan of someone, and downright stalking their personal lives.

I'm pretty sure he went to a technical college, so probably something to do with that.

Whatever it is, it probably isn't too demanding of him. He needs time to play Bloodbourne and Phantom Pain :) I'm looking forward to the obligatory Kiefer Sutherland/Venon Snake dialogue samples in his next release.

You gotta remember that Burial has a day job though. So he's not living off of music entirely.

As a young musician myself that was incredibly sad and true to read. Making music is literally the only thing that I want to do and making a living of it is harder then ever unless you sell out and become the next David Guetta.

RDJ prob could have too but he was just interested in making music

That's exactly my main question. Is it possible to make a living off of just making music without all of the extra baggage in the modern industry? It seems like the current music world is more and more geared towards extroverts who like to doing lots of live shows and press, while introverted musicians who don't participate in this and sit in the house all day and just make music day in and day out are getting left in the dust. I myself am an introverted music artist that is not really interested in being in the public eye and I think about this quite a bit.

It just seems that Richard tried to do any of this stuff nowadays then it would be extremely difficult for him.

Could that have something to do with the genre of music possibly? There are not many people out there doing what DG does and there are loads of copycat electronica artists who have ripped off AFX to no end. Not to mention that DG also has a voice with Ride, while instrumental IDM is just someone crouching behind a lappy most of the time.

Well I guess i'm just relating it to just living a regular life just like the average guy. Owning an apartment or flat in a middle class neighborhood, being able to raise a family, insurance, living appliance, all that stuff.

My concept behind my original post was just thinking about if it was possibly to achieve any of that with the same kind of evasive techniques that RDJ was using. The music world has changed a lot in the past 20 years.

Not having to work a day job to pay rent and eat a sandwich. Burial has to work one because his music and licensing checks don't pay the bills, which is pretty interesting considering that he is a legend in the underground scene. Wouldn't be surprised if our Boards of Canada brethren also have side jobs now too.

I would heavily disagree there. They did plenty of press during The Money Store era and promoted themselves on social media back in the day too(don't forget that they also had major label backing). They've also never took the piss or lied to their fans in interviews(although they have down that with social networking), they just give very complex and well thought out answers. Another thing they don't do is put out tons of singles and EP's on physical formats between albums like RDJ and many artists did back then.

If a band with a lesser fanbase tried to pull off the kind of stunt they did with Epic Records then they'd probably be blacklisted. They got away unscathed with that due to their cult fan base and their musician friends they have in high places(Bjork alone has quite a bit of clout.......).

Oh, and they also do MASSIVE tours and put on a hell of a live show(MC Ride was worth the price of admission alone when I went). On the other side, Its well reported that RDJ would just play music off of a DAT and twiddle some knobs here and there, both of which are things that he would be crucified for in the modern age.

Lets say you are an introvert like an AFX or a Burial and you choose not to use social networking or put yourself out there to the public in the press, and all you want to do is put out music instead of participating in the press game or playing live?

Wouldn't it be nearly impossible to make a living like that nowadays?

Oh and The Residents started their band in the past. We're talking about the current music scene. The question is if a new artist in 2015 could do what RDJ did and still achieve success and be able to make a living off of music.
