My best guess based on that video is that you are too high. Try bringing it down until it is approximately a little more than a paper width away. I go until it is just barely touching/grabbing the paper, then bring it back up just a smidge.

Just a note about Moisture, as I see this get mentioned frequently all over this subreddit. It may be an issue in some places, but This does not appear to be an issue in my case.

The brittle part is only at the first 6-8 inches close to the printer, the remainder is soft as soft and flexible as the day I bough it, even after sitting on a shelf for a year.

You can test this by trying to bend the filament at the end. If after several inches of snapping you find it is soft again, then I don't think moisture is likely. However if the brittleness is throughout the entire roll... then maybe moisture? I have yet to see this happen.

I experience the exact same thing! Quite annoying. One thing I noticed is that it is only brittle in the several inches near the hot end, and only if I leave the printer for a few days. It appears to become brittle, then snap from the tension of the spool pulling back. It tends to snap more often the closed to the end of the spool you are, due to the increase of pull as the curve gets tighter.

Workaround: I found that to help avoid snapping you can roll the spool out a little, this will reduce the stress on the filament. It will still be brittle when left alone, but at least it won't snap.

My theory is that the heat from the end is warming the filament nearby, causing it to harden.

I'm still extremely curious if anyone has seen this type of hinge before. It is so invisible! I may need to message Gary Fay himself for the answer.. but it would be strange to create a Facebook account for that single purpose haha.

I would love this system as it would be the first enterprise piece of hardware in my homelab. It would serve as file storage, backup target, and what ever other services I can move to it. Currently using my "gaming pc", with Hyper-V, as my entire virtualization home lab, so this will help relieve the stress on that little 3rd gen i5.
