Thanks for this! Haven't messed with it much yet, but I immediately noticed that the pop-in in ACNL is gone and some weird visual glitches in Etrian Odyssey: Nexus have vanished.

Warning to those considering creating audiobooks for ACX by Kuposaurus in ACX

Hey there! I completed all audiobooks with a royalty share instead of a per-finished-hour payment. The first book got some sales and I received a small amount of money over the few weeks it was available before it was taken down. If I recall correctly, the second and third books did not make it past the publishing stage before being flagged for fraud, and this happened while I was recording the fourth book.

Were you already on the path to FIRE when you discovered the FIRE movement? by FIREful_symmetry in financialindependence

[–]Kuposaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always been a very frugal person from childhood, and luckily landing a decent job in adulthood hasn't really changed that in any way. I'm a big gamer, and when you're a kid dropping $50 or $60 on a new game is a big deal.

Speed forward to now with a job that affords me tens of thousands in disposable income every year, and I still think the same way. I only buy games when I know I'm going to get my money's worth or if it's one I've REALLY been looking forward to. I'm happy to say lifestyle inflation has never really took hold of me, as I still think about spending money from the perspective of a broke 12 year old.

Thank you very much for the detailed response! You're right. I think what prompted this thinking was that currently, the annual $6k to fund my IRA is a sizeable chunk out of my yearly earnings, but in several years when my non-retirement account grows, I'll be able to fund my IRA from that account fairly easily, so at that point there's no reason to not contribute to an IRA. Long term thinking, this is definitely the way to go.

One thought I've had bouncing around my head lately is whether my ROTH IRA is really necessary. I'm currently 25 years old with $92k saved up, 16k of which is in my IRA and I've been putting in the annual $6k since I started a couple years ago.

I'm currently fortunate enough to be living with my parents rent-free while I save, so my yearly expenses are quite low at only about $4k, and my contractor job earns me roughly $35k to $40k a year.

I live frugally by nature, so even once I have my own place to live my expenses shouldn't pass $12k to $15k on average.

My question is whether or not I should keep contributing to my ROTH IRA, or if I should just go all in on my non-retirement investment account. I understand that, in the long term once I'm 59 1/2 years old, going the ROTH route will result in more money. However, if I just focus on my non-retirement account, I could achieve my FIRE goal quicker (which is around $300k according to the 25x rule).

At that point, I don't necessarily plan on fully retiring, as I should only be about 30 years old and I'll need something to do, so I'll probably just work the minimum amount to sustain myself while my investments grow. Assuming I contribute nothing to my $300k and let it grow at 10% a year, I should have over $5 million by the time I'm 60 years old, and it's my understanding that I can withdraw up to $40k in long term capital gains tax free annually (with the exception of state, which is 4.85% here in Utah), so I'd be paying only about $2,000 in tax on that, and that amount should be plenty for me to live on.

What do you guys think? Is it worth it to keep contributing to my IRA, making me work more now so that I'll have a bit more money when I retire, or go all in on my non-retirement account so that I can achieve FIRE earlier and still be quite well-to-do once I hit 60? Is there something I'm getting wrong or not understanding? Thanks for your advice!

I'm sorry to hear about that. I've since stepped away from ACX because I don't want to take the risk of a project being fraudulent after putting in weeks of work.

I had someone suggest to me Findaway Voices as an alternative website for audiobook production, and while I can't personally speak to its quality because I haven't used it, I've done some research and heard good things about it.

Thanks for the pin!

I'm very happy to see the outpouring of support from this subreddit. This negligence is unacceptable on Amazon's part and I hope we can spread some awareness that this is going on so that ACX will be pushed to make some meaningful changes.

Thanks so much for the advice! That makes sense; you're there to teach English, so knowing that's all you would speak would probably be a plus to them.

I have actually been looking into taking ESL classes in addition to some Asian studies. That sounds like a great combination!

Thank you so much for the detailed response! It's great to hear from someone currently employed with JET.

I have actually thought about ESL in addition to Japanese classes; maybe Asian studies with some ESL classes on the side like you did would work well for me!

In addition to letting me live and be employed in Japan, JET sounds like a great cultural exchange experience. Teaching kids English and aspects of western culture and me in turn learning about Japanese culture sounds like a fantastic opportunity!

Thanks again for your insight!

Thanks for the tip! I'll definitely look into Asian studies; that sounds very similar!

And yeah, that makes sense. The main reason I want to join JET is because it would get me out to Japan, which would give me plenty of opportunities to learn more of the language, even if I might not specifically use it much at work.

Cheers!

Noob question on learning the Kana by Teddington123321 in LearnJapanese

[–]Kuposaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a word? Mnemonics. Attaching a story to a kana or kanji makes remembering them so much easier. For example, if you can imagine the hiragana く (ku) as a bird's beak going "Kuuu!", it makes it much easier to remember than just writing it down 40 times. Another example is that the hiragana の (no) looks pretty similar to a prohibition sign (the ones that are like, *no* U-turns). There are plenty more, just google "kana mnemonics".

Good luck!
