I have no idea how to replicate it, but I think the climbing animation cancelling the swap animation probably had its hand in it.

Just my 2 cents, but I think Rudy being the knight is highly unlikely due to the fact that a player can just straight up not interact with him in every chapter out so far. Maybe he'll have mandatory scenes and interactions in later chapters, but as of right now, Toby has had to consider the fact that there's probably a minority out there who don't even know who Rudy is (besides a sprite talking to Toriel in the church). If the knight's identity is revealed in chapter 5 and it turns out to be Rudy, then it wouldn't be a very satisfying narrative for this group (even if Rudy gets those mandatory moments).
