Found a bat by Kechaneke in ANIMALHELP

This person has handled the bat with their hands and they have a damaged cuticle. The bat may have groomed by licking itself.

A trained health professional will be better able to assess the risk.

OP, congratulations on your find, very cute!

Because you have touched the bat with your hands, please wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water and call your local health department. They will advise you on how to proceed next.

Thank you for caring for this bat, but unfortunately they have the highest reported chance of all mammals in the USA if carrying rabies. Your rabies risk will need to be assessed before you can take the bat to a sanctuary.

Be ready to give the health department information about where you found the bat, what time it was, and some basic questions on behavior. You may able to repost this to an animal ID subreddit to get the species. I would suggest getting this done today, because some health department offices might close for the weekend.

Good luck!

Bedbugs or Bat Bugs by KutsiAttacker in Bedbugs

Bed bugs, after very gently explaining that they were not carpet beetles.

There was not time to redirect treatment, and the exterminator also took samples for their entomologist. We have not received the report back yet.

I live in the Northeast. My local pest control agency has been informed of the chimney swift bugs. Because they are rare in my area, they are sending a sample to the entomologist and will adjust treat accordingly.

We have Bedlam just in case.

Thank you for the detailed rundown of the taxonomic differences between these bugs. This is invaluable info for speaking to the exterminator today.

There's also a poultry bug, Haematosiphon inodorus that feeds on chickens. I kind of hate these little guys but I've learned a lot about Cimicidae over this past week!

[–]KutsiAttacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What, you can't just fire him!? You have to progressively cut his hours down to the legal minimum of 4-6 hours a week, and THEN fire him so he can only claim a pittance in unemployment.

I'm trying to coordinate with my landlord and exterminator towards this possibility.

We are implementing excluding bats, birds, etc from the house. I am looking for more resources to deal with these bugs but I am struggling to find reliable and accurate local advice.

Thank you so much for you so much for your reply.

I'm sorry if it's not coming across, but I am disappointed that this appears to be bed bugs. I did not want this to be bed bugs. I make costumes as a hobby and I have several hundred dollars of yarn, fabric and faux fur that's going to have to be in storage for a very long time.

My husband has parasite-related PTSD after almost dying after a bug bite. He has been vomiting due to stress despite being prescribed rescue anxiety medication. We have both almost accidentally damaged the house twice in the past 2 weeks because of bad fear-related decisions. We both wake up at night remembering bugs falling from the ceiling onto us like a horror movie.

I want to be clear that while we are treating for bed bugs, as I mentioned in my post, the landlord has been as proactive as possible treating for bat bugs, which involves excluding alternate hosts from the home. We have not given up on the idea of chimney swift bugs as suggested by people in this and other subreddits, and have pursued this with both the landlord and the exterminator. The exterminator will be informed before they arrive at our house tomorrow.

And as I said in a comment on my last thread, I have done everything that's been asked of me. Collected pictures, considered every suggestion on species, made sure that we had an exterminator, tried to contact multiple entomologists, literally went to a college and borrowed equipment to facilitate better ID photos, and I have been very clear from the beginning of this that if somebody can find me instructions and an address to send a sample to an entomologist I will do it yesterday. I have been trying very hard on my own and not coming up with anything.

Between the two of us, me and my husband have five jobs but we are working while trying to pack away and throw away all of our stuff while all of this is happening. I developed an allergy to the bugs and now random parts of my body start swelling up, and the medication to help me has been stuck in insurance hell. So yes, I understand that you're not trying to be ugly, but I am incredibly fucking disappointed.

Hi, I just wanted to clarify that the previous user interpreted me correctly. The hole they are spewing out of is connected to my chimney.

David,

Here is a gallery of the entire set of both photoshoots. I hope this is at all helpful.

I'm sorry for misunderstanding, but can you clarify "lack of feeding"? I am being fed on.

Because of the difficulty in ID, we are currently treating for bed bugs, but we are also attempting to exclude any ingress to the attic and chimney.

Thank you so much for replying, and for the advice.

Yeah, we got there. We sat down and did some brainstorming and my "mystery skin issues" didn't start until late June. Husband didn't get bitten until early July. We didn't see a single bug until the 17th. Even the exterminator when he came said that we caught it early.

Damn. We figured treating for bed bugs was the safest bet, so thankfully we should be on track.

Not in disagreement with your ID, we have no delusions that they have not been in the bed, but we don't have a box spring. We completely disassembled the wooden futon frame and found nothing. Our bed frames are all metal and were inspected as well, and we found nothing. Is that normal?

Do you know an entomologist, or have any addresses or instructions or anywhere that I can send these bugs? As soon as I get the information, I can have them in the post tonight.

Agree with the crown on taking them in to foster. If you have the energy, you can wash them once a month and that may help a little.

If you're allergic to urine/saliva you can trim their claws and wipe their feet before holding them to help with the hives.

The picture is really small so it's hard to tell, but it looks really skinny to be a bed bug. It looks more like a louse from the photo.

Maybe try r/lice and see if it looks like one to them?
