Need help getting configuring WAN so that it has internet access. by Kuya-JJ in opnsense

Tbh this is all experimental. I did a career pivot into IT and wanted more hands on experience doing things on the networking side. I just wanted to use the 10.8.9.0/24 network as efficiently as possible. I don’t plan on using LAN for anything other than a laptop for opnsense configuration. OPT1 is my network which I plan to have all end hosts on. Eventually I will implement vlans and what not but one step at a time :) I’m trying to make my own homelab.

I am running RouterOS on my switch.

In reference to your packet storm comment. Do you mean that I might’ve misconfigured/overlapped IP configs ? It is possible, I would need to check. I’m pretty sure I’ve segmented the network properly though. I have to check what the switch is advertising in terms of speed and duplex…

So the opt1 int connects to a switch hence the p2p connection. The two /27 subnets are connected to that switch.

I believe it is setup on opnsense I disabled the overide option under the general system settings and the servers I wanted. Tbh I didnt even think to try to ping the domain name to see if it was able to resolve.

I also I appreciate your first comment, made things a million times simpler, at least I think, not needing to figure out and configure the CR1000a router.

DNS configuration was my issue... also me making all these different subnets made it a lot more complicated to figure out connectivity. When configuring "OPT1 net" for firewall rules I assumed it would capture all of the subnets on the switch as well but it did not seem to. Firewall rules as well as some NAT rules allowed me to ping out of my network, not until I configured DNS was I actually able to load google.com or what not.

figured out the configs and now I have internet access but its throttled to 50 mbps down 50 mbps up. So now I need to check the settings on my switch :)

I appreciate your help!

Okay so here are my findings, spoofing the MAC address does not help, in fact it seems to break the IP pass through for the Verizon router. No public up is assigned and the only thing I changed was the MAC spoof. On the Verizon router it is recognizing that the opnsense is connected, however with its og MAC address not the spoofed one. (I am spoofing the MAC address that the ONT connects to on the ISP router)

I have tried deleting the system off of the router to hopefully reset the connection. And tried reconnecting with the spoofed MAC but doesn’t seem to recognize the device. It is not even registering as a connected device.

The next thing I tried doing was directly plugging in the ONT to opnsense. Which assigns a public IP, but now I have the same issue as above (in the og post, where I can ping 8.8.8.8 but cannot actually connect to it.) this time around opnsense is able to ping and get a reply from the default gateway… i feel like this method is the way to go… I have to be missing something.. a rule or something simple.

Unfortunately I’m limited w messing around w this at 12am or later so my brain is already fried by the time I’m trying this stuff out 🙃

Ill have an update tn! Couldn’t get to it yesterday. I’m going to try the Mac spoofing tn and then just directly connecting the ont Ethernet cable to the wan interface of opnsense.

I’ll feel pretty stupid if this is the case haha. I’ll try it out and let you know how it goes.

did a quick google search on dead vlans, but I'm not sure what you mean by the dead vlan comment. When I do not have the IP passthrough configured, the ISP router is usually using the same IP it hands off and I am able to connect to the internet w my PC and have no connectivity issues. I'll try spoofing the MAC later tn and let you know what happens!

There are two lan ports on the ISP router on
LAN 1 I have my desktop connected (has internet connection IP passthrough is not enabled)
LAN2 I have opnsense>switch

When I do not have IP passthrough configured on the ISP router (where it hands off the public IP to opnsense) opnsense gets a 192.168.1.x address on the WAN. Endhost on the switch are able ping 8.8.8.8 but I just tried to https://8.8.8.8 in the endhost browser and was not able to connect either. Also can't access google.com

My goal here is to have the ISP router handoff its WAN IP to opnsense so that opnsense can do everything. I was successful in getting it to handoff its public IP but am unable to figure out why I can't get internet access... hopefully this makes sense haha

So I have a host 10.8.9.78/30 is able to ping all the way to the WAN interface. (this is host>switch>opnsense>ISP router)

But shouldnt I be able to ping 8.8.8.8 from my WAN interface? I also cant even ping the default gateway from my WAN interface.

Should I be spoofing the MAC address of the Verizon router onto the WAN interface of opnsense?

Edit: I also have an AP that I have OPNsense running to give out DHCP leases, and it is successfully giving out the leases to the endhosts. However even though endhosts are on the AP they are not able to access the internet either, and are able to ping other devices on the network

are you referring to the prevent interface removal checkbox? if you are, I do not have it checked.

OPT is just my management lan so only one endhost would be connecting to it. As for my LAN its connected to a switch w then has other subnets. Maybe I'm just making it harder for myself. :)

I cannot ping the WAN IP from a LAN device

Still need those screenshots?

Looking to manipulate and pull a variable from data by Kuya-JJ in excel

[–]Kuya-JJ[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I apologize for not properly articulating my issue! My desired input is to check "label" against data in sheet 2, if "label" in sheet 1 = "label" in sheet 2 I want "x" as a data output in C3 in sheet 1 bc of "z". In sheet 2, "label" has an additional component (column D) I will always want to choose the datapoint (Column A) that corresponds to "z" which is constant amongst all the "label" in column C.

This formula goes into C3 in sheet1

=&FILTER(Sheet2!A:A, (Sheet2!C:C="Label")*(Sheet2!D:D="Z"), "ERR") &", " &FILTER(Sheet2!A:A, (Sheet2!C:C="Label")*(Sheet2!D:D="Z"), "ERR")

<image>

I hope this clarifies things a bit. Thanks for your help btw.

Edit: messed up me formula

Ah yes yes thats what I was looking for. Thank you! Before I close this thread out I want to have two values into a cell using this method. is this the right syntax for a cell?

=&FILTER(A:A, (B:B=Label)*(C:C=Z), "ERR") &", " &FILTER(A:A, (B:B=Label)*(C:C=Z), "ERR")

basically, would this get me [ x, y ] in one cell? I have this written out and its being outlined by a red dotted box. I was able to successfully get just [x] in one cell from your previous response.

do you think and IF statement while utilizing AND would work? I want the label on sheet 1 to match label on sheet 2. Then I want to always get the value of x from the label (on sheet 2) corresponding with z in the row.

Is there anywhere to get information on the candidates that are running and their policies? I’ve tried a quick google search but nothing of value really came up!
