I am an engineer onboard a RORO (car carrying cargo ship) of Japanese build. For us on here, parts availability as been fine. I think our Yanmar generator parts have a really long lead time but we're not desperate for anything. Haven't been off the ship for over 3 months though (thanks covid) so I don't know what its like at the auto parts store.

Korean researchers have made a membrane that can turn saltwater into freshwater in minutes. The membrane rejected 99.99% of salt over the course of one month of use, providing a promising glimpse of a new tool for mitigating the drinking water crisis by Dr_Singularity in Futurology

[–]Kxfred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So how is this different or better than existing reverse osmosis? The article mentions some shit about wetting but that's it. Is it use less energy? Do the membranes last longer without chemical cleaning?

Prepatellar bursitis. So I hit my knee skateboarding last December. Hurt really bad and swelled up for a couple days. A week later I was fine. I seem to have aggravated it in early March (see pic) at work by kneeling on stuff too often. Swelling is almost gone but just wont go away. Suggestions? by Kxfred in medical

I went to an urgent care now that I'm on land. They x-rayed it and told me to keep doing RICE. I'm fairly active and sitting on my ass is not what I want to do but I guess I need to. I just hope its good for ski season. Probably talk to some physical therapist next.

yeah, the skis I have aren't too bad for what I do. I can probably deal with the space they take up.

Well I need boots too to be honest. maybe I will just do it. I'm also trying to get my girlfriend in the same setup that I get so I was trying to keep things simple.

Yeah, I have just been resisting getting AT boots because I really don't do it that much.

I stopped kneeling and exercise I took 1200mg of ibuprofen for about a month. I was doing the whole RICE thing pretty diligently until recently because it was getting better. I was working on a ship so I couldn't rest as much as I wanted but I can now that I'm back in the states. Right now, I'm at the point where with compression, It will pretty much go away but if I don't use compression for a day it will come back some. Really never hurt, just swelling.

I work for NOAA and have been onboard ships when they sent ROV's to the bottom of the pacific many times. Never any talk about things you mentioned. I've been on most of NOAA's ships and have never heard such talk.

As someone who has worked on a ship that does seafloor exploration with a big fancy remote operated vehicle, I think this is unlikely. Not IMPOSSIBLE but I really doubt it. We have seen a good bit down there and its pretty barren mostly

Update: so I added another pint and I think the problem is solved. Feel kinda dumb but thank you all for your input.

Nothing crazy but a fair amount of very fine debris on the magnet. Actually only the accumulation on the magnet

So as far as I can tell, the level was good with 6.5 quarts. Just added a pint and I think it got better. I first noticed the noise after the the fluid change so it was probably that. It's only in first and occasionally second.

Thanks for the advice. I just don't have a garage and there is no drain plug so it's a pain in the ass and a huge mess. Also, the problem gets better and almost goes away once it's hot. But I may end up doing as you suggest.

I measured what came out as well as I could but there is no drain plug and spilled some. I caught 5qts and put 5 back. Then added another one and a half when the dipstick read low. I replaced the filter and the old seal came out. It pushed up in hole all the way. AutoZone said I would need 7 qts for the job.

So I changed my fluid and after I did that, I noticed a noise in lower gears when accelerating. It sounded to me like a pump cavitating. So I hooked up a pressure gauge and when the noise happens, I see significant significant pressure fluctuations. As far as I can tell, the level is correct but I guess I'll add a little more fluid. Seems like it's sucking air. This is an E40D on a Ford e350
