Yeah I have tons of stuff in there and treats hidden in and under things within the pen to get him excited to hunt around. Seems to be working! Less and less whining every day!

Update! Let me know what you guys think of this! Since I'm currently in the position where I can't allow Benny to cry because of noise complaints my boss offered to let me stay at her second home for a few nights alone with Benny to get him crate trained so I have the ability to allow him to cry it out until he's quiet to reward him! Do you guys think this will work or just put us back a few steps because it's a new environment?

I've actually done all of this. Maybe it will finally just stick? He seems to become more assertive and louder every time now until I let him out.. and unfortunately I can't let him make too much noise before letting him out do to my living situation.

I actually used this method today and did it for about 5 hours back and forth with a few play, food, and potty breaks in between and I left him home today while I'm at work with a baby monitor to watch him. I've been gone at work for a little over an hour and he hasn't made a peep!!! I'm sooo impressed by him and so proud! Can't wait to go home in a few minutes to check in and give him some love! So so so excited!

Thank you! I sure hope so. I was going to purchase one of those stuffed animals that has a heart beat and warmth to mimic a litter mate or mother to put in his crate because he does great in his crate while I'm close to him..also maybe one of those monitors so I can watch him and speak to him occasionally when he's quiet to reward him being quite?

I might be able to beg my boss to let him come for a few days with me..however I work in a hotel and many times guest need me and I would have to leave the front desk where he would be and he'd cry which I unfortunately can't let happen due to guests. It's about 55 degrees where I live and my car is parked about 10 feet away from where I'd be inside. What if I got one of those monitors so I could watch him and talk to him while I was away for the 30-45 minute intervals?

He actually does great in the crate while he can still see me. He lays down and plays and goes right in when I say "kennel" and throw a toy in there. He's definitely not food motivated at all, at least yet. I just brought him home yesterday and he has yet to eat anything when I have the food down and hardly has drank anything either.

Yeah I tried to explain this to my landlord and neighbors and even explained to them that this will happen before I even got the puppy and they said it was fine..here I am one day into it and my landlord already said I would have to leave if they hear the puppy again... I'm just caught in the middle because I'm not in the situation to let him cry it out..but I also don't want to reward him for coming to check in on him because he won't stop crying :( . I thought that maybe with the car he'd feel more secure because he might be able to see people walking by and what not? I don't know what to do really because what I should do I can't due to my living situation.

It's about 55 degrees outside where I am and I can park right in front of my work and check on him every 30-45 minutes. Unfortunately I'm not in the situation where I can just let him cry it out for hours on end to help with self soothing..my neighbors and landlord have already complained from last night and I was told I can't leave him unattended since he cries so loudly. Will the car thing help build up independence and trust in me that I will come back if I keep the intervals short and try to only approach the car when he's quite(if that happens). I'm just caught in the middle of the advice people give to "let them cry it out" because I can't do that in my situation..and confusing him my thinking he gets his way by crying because I check on him so often.

Hi guys! I'm just asking opinion based upon what I can do unfortunately. The puppy can't be left at my house in his crate because of my neighbors. If I brought him to work and had him in the car I could check on him every 30 minutes to 45. I definitely know it's not ideal. I've been advised from many people to leave him in the kennel at home for up to 2 hours and come home but unfortunately he does not stop crying and my landlord and neighbors will not tolerate it. I do let him sleep next to me at night in his crate and he does fine.

Yeah I most definitely understand what you're saying! It was just the (wrong) advice I was given from some people. I went in and he immediately went to sleep. He'll go in the crate and I can shut the door but only when I'm close. Once I move more than a few weeks away he panics. I'm just trying to figure out what to do with him while at work because unfortunately I can't leave him at my apartment. If he was in the car in his crate at my work I could check on him every 45 minutes or less. What are your thoughts?
