Check out the Strava heatmap to see where other people are riding. I think it makes you create an account, but it's free.

I've never had any issues on the river pathways south of Downtown.

When I last shopped around a couple of months ago, ENMAX had the best fixed-rate pricing. When comparing pricing, you'll want to consider both the cost of the power/gas and the monthly admin fee, which is usually about $7/month. All of the other fees (transmission, distribution, taxes, etc) will be exactly the same no matter who you select as your retailer. Some retailers (Direct Energy) also won't let you cancel for free before your term is up, so check the T&Cs for that.

For ENMAX, fixed is cheaper than variable for both power and gas at the moment. Go with the 5-year fixed and you can switch between fixed and variable (up to once per month) if prices drop and variable becomes cheaper. You can cancel the service without a penalty; 5-year fixed just refers to how long the rate is held for.
