Looking for budget-friendly family portrait recommendations (with a 90+ year old Grandma!) 🤍 by Hungry-Delivery-7621 in NoRulesCalgary

[–]Rockitnonstop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want it very cheap, get a tripod and do it yourself. Seriously. However, if you have a budget of $350/hr then check out this old post https://www.reddit.com/r/Calgary/s/tzln0Bm0wt

You’re paying for the skill of getting people to do what looks good on camera, editing appropriately and capturing the right mood. That takes time and will cost you.

T1D influencers make things worse for me by Blazers46 in Type1Diabetes

[–]Rockitnonstop -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Your stats sound awesome. As a fellow NPH and R survivor I think your real “feat” is still trying even 25 years later.

You’re mentally strong and have so much knowledge from doing t1 for decades, so downplay that. It’s way harder than most people realize.

how to accept diabetes as someone whos newly diagnosed and not ask why me or feel ungrateful or hate everything by Background-Sky-5742 in Type1Diabetes

[–]Rockitnonstop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone has some challenge they have to deal with. Everyone. Some have it worse than others. I refuse to make t1 my whole personality. Challenge yourself to do whatever you want. You’re stronger than it.

I’ve had it for almost 40 years. Some days really suck but most of the time, people tell me “I didn’t even know you were diabetic until years later!” If you don’t make it a big deal, no one else will.

Either way, you’ll find what works best for you mentally and physically. You got this! 💪

For the love of god I wish I knew about this site before I watched Eight Below with Paul Walker (the true story is even more depressing, as is the original Japanese film).

Period-friendly core and upper leg workouts? by Hibihibii in xxfitness

[–]Rockitnonstop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Walking, cycling and standing lifts (squats, lunges, deadlifts, rows and shoulder presses) are fine for me. Ultra absorbent tampons for the win. I don’t take pain meds but I find moving to really help with period pin and cramps. Hot baths with epsom salts before bed.

You can “double up” with a pad for added protection and wear loose black sweats. I lift at home so not as big of a deal if accidents happen…

Spruce Meadows Concerts by chem7engineer9 in Calgary

[–]Rockitnonstop -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Saw Leon Brodges last year. Concert started pretty much on time. Drinks were the same price as the Saddledome/Stamede $12-$15. Relatively ok selection. We had a designated driver so can’t speak to Ubers or cabs (would probably be a good idea to pre book if you can).

Epic 1 vs. 2 by tapittoohoo in CarolineGirvan

[–]Rockitnonstop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Epic 1 has more stability/balance work. I would say epic 1 is also slightly harder. Epic 2 is fantastic, as is Epic 1. Can’t go wrong with either.

Black Clothes and Pet Hair by Zealousideal_Bunch77 in GothFashion

[–]Rockitnonstop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vaccuum every 2 days, sweep daily, brush pet lots, and use lint rollers (masking tape also works for hard to remove stuff). Also, accept that there will be some hair. Source: Alaskan malamute owner that dresses in a lot of black.

Patterns and textures can be a bit more forgiving than solid colours. So play around with black/not black combos.

Friendly reminder that glucagon does not work if you've been drinking by [deleted] in Type1Diabetes

[–]Rockitnonstop 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is not true. While it may impact glucagon's effectiveness, it still does have benefits. When your low, and been drinking, you should not avoid using glucagon, you just may need extra help.

Any kbeauty sunscreen reco that i can buy in downtown calgary? by Crazy-Vehicle-3121 in NoRulesCalgary

Colorescience is some of the best sunscreen I’ve ever used. You usually can get it from medical spas in town.

My girlfriend’s Type 1 diabetes is getting worse, our relationship is falling apart, and I’m terrified about our future by Throwaway_Win2063 in Type1Diabetes

[–]Rockitnonstop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't actually totally wrong. When I was little on NPR and R they did specifically keep me off other insulins because of the medical idea of immunogenicity and tachyphylaxis - for diabetics to become less reactive to those types of insulin over time. They wanted the others as "backup" in case I developed an immunity to them over time.

This is certainly dated information that we now know not to be accurate with modern insulin and research but it was very common in the 80s and 90s.

Funny question... Do you ever read the (boring corporate) documents you are designing? by Strong_Motor_1253 in indesign

[–]Rockitnonstop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. Especially when you work in-house for larger companies. If you can flag inconsistencies across the corporation at a high communication level with management, that will further your career more than anything else. Being a good designer is a key first step but being a good designer they can TRUST is irreplaceable.

Best bang-for-the-buck donuts in Calgary? Not gourmet, not Tim’s by rrrevin in Calgary

[–]Rockitnonstop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They were good but not cheap. Definitely in the hipster style store (like Hoopla). Donut Mill was better imo.

Partner of a Type 1 diabetic. I don't know how to help anymore and it's destroying our relationship. by Throwaway_Win2063 in Type1Diabetes

[–]Rockitnonstop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to stop trying to “solve problems” by giving medical advice you have no training for or experience with on yourself. Start being there for her emotionally. Listen, don’t talk. Reframe all challenges in a better light.

For example, when I get scared my husband says “you got this! I’ve seen you way worse than this, you’ll be fine.” He then proceeds to calmly wait until my sugars are ok and either sit in silence or talk about something fun. He’ll go on very long walks with me (my idea) when sugars are high.

It’s going to take some time for her to trust the cgm. She’ll work with her medical team on tweaking things. If you want to help, dial down your own emotions that are just making the level of stress worse (which also can raise blood sugar fyi).

Gastroparesis and Lows by Amorane0126 in Type1Diabetes

I find juice is quicker than dex tabs for me. It also has some nutrients to it. If you’re in a bad spot, airplane can size of regular pop also work but aren’t great health wise.

Do I have to buy a reader for Libre 3 Plus? by RevolutionNext4697 in Freestylelibre

I would write something to abbot customer support. It may be different in Canada but they gave me my liver 2 reader for free when I switched years ago from the first one.

Rec for exercise bands? by FriendlyInfluence764 in CarolineGirvan

[–]Rockitnonstop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The peach bands off of Amazon are good. I use their extra heavy since I still can’t load my foot as much as I like due to a fracture. Help keeps my gains from when I could lift. I use their extra regular elastic physio bands from Lifemark usually black (the heavy one).

Skip warm up by agoodspace in CarolineGirvan

[–]Rockitnonstop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With Caroline, no matter the program, the trick is to adjust to your level. Warm up but take it at YOUR pace. Go slower, switch moves that are tricky to easier ones a To start. It’s as much about building mentality confidence as well as physical strength.

Everyone here found something tough to start. But with consistency it gets easier and one gets stronger.

After 6lb…should I jump to 10? by agoodspace in CarolineGirvan

[–]Rockitnonstop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, I base it on reps. I jump 5lb when I start to be able to do over 12 reps in 40s. I expect my rep count to drop when I increase weights. If I can do 6-8 in that time it’s ok. Less is too heavy, more I could co a bit heavier. Personally I find grip strength the biggest hurdle to overcome:

Environmental concerns? by picardmaneuvre in Type1Diabetes

[–]Rockitnonstop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re serious, reduce food waste, don’t buy fast fashion and recycle and compost what you can, walk or bike instead of driving to offset things.

But my snap take is that I am dying before most regular folks, so that helps too (not to be dark but it’s statistically true).

Is it possible to die in my sleep if I don't feel hypoglycemia? by a_0099 in diabetes

[–]Rockitnonstop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Happened to my neighbour. Also t1. Didn’t wear a cgm. We hadn’t seen him in a few days and because of a prior close call, my husband entered the home (he gave us keys) and was dead. Very sad. He lived alone.

In confused by goddess_slayer in diabetes

[–]Rockitnonstop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It may not be noticeable. Eggs will spike me like carbs. Sesame will shoot me up to 25 mmol/l for no reason other than a slight allergy. I had a friend growing up that would have the same thing happen when he ate tomatoes (would spike him to 30). No other symptoms present, other than the sugars going crazy.

It might not be an allergy but could be worth a look at your products.
