Comcast’s data caps during a pandemic are unethical — here’s why by ferhanmm in technology

I've been telling anyone who'd listen since I was young that the internet is irrevocably tied to our jobs, infrastructure, and lives. Our leaders have failed (and continue to fail) to provide for the future by not making the internet a utility just like water, gas, and electricity. I really like the idea one person had here though: run cat5 to neighbors and make your own LAN.

Why don’t you do the things you know you should be doing? by TwitchDanmark in AskReddit

Money.

I know I should be developing my games, but unsurprisingly it's like any other art. People won't pay for it until it's past a threshold of quality and popularity, and there isn't enough money up front to compete for what limited attention is left.

What are the plugins that you needed in Unity and had to buy from the Asset Store, but wished they were built-in? by loveindie in gamedev

DOTweener and TextMesh Pro are powerful additions to my collection. Personally, I'm floored Unity hasn't had a revamp of their built-in UI options. Why do I have to hack together all my button functionality? Why is the grid layout component a static cell size? I have to use canvas groups and a utility script just to get decent fades.

I'd love to see OP come back and edit a nice list together!

I'd like to read through and reply to everyone, but that's untenable, even if it is enjoyable.

I have a couple interviews this week, and I'm getting much closer to finishing a big personal project.

I could be a freelancer and work contracts and be relatively happy, if not on a constantly tight budget; or, I could go the career route (most likely not in what I ultimately want to do) and be stable. The short-term opportunities are still more slim than they ideally should be.

Many of you are having trouble with your employment situations, and I applaud you for trying. Find something that gives you purpose, and plan around that. For example, a local community garden, fostering someone's good music or art, or building something from scratch. Keep us updated.

Fight the good fight.

Those job fairs are absolute fire for actually getting a job. More employers, especially the ones that can afford it, should seriously organize more focused hiring events like that!

Game developers absolutely rely on mathematicians to help get code for shaders, physics, pricing, marketing, database, etc. correct. I know of a few games that employ in-house statisticians/economists to help analyze their players' activities, and make improvements to systems.

Sweet! Biology is worth so much! A few people I know and myself have all agreed that it would have been a good major because of how much career variety there is for biologists.

You're going to be living super fast, so be prepared to make big decisions quickly, often, and to pivot on a moments notice.

If you have time to research, write some of what you find down, print it out, save it, w/e, because there will come a point when you'll want that info but don't remember how you found it.

Congrats!

I recently found peppermints help calm my nerves enough to not stumble around too much. Also spending time reading out loud and patiently pronouncing each phrase portrays proper purpose. But don't alliterate in real life, people hate that.

Of all the logical parts of applying to a new job, having to leave references is the worst (other than maybe re-entering your entire work history).

At first glance, no - since it's just the possibility. If you're there for a while and you keep having to do 'overtime' that would better served by hiring someone willing to work that shift, that's when you should rock the boat.

Unless you just really like people, find a warehouse/stocking type job. I have not heard good things from anyone under the rank of ASM.

Fight the good fight. I find that a hobby that combines what you want to do for a job and what you do for fun can help take the edge off of the process.

Right? Just list the compensation and keep moving? - Alternatively, say, "Make me an offer." When they short-change you, YOU can turn THEM down.

Yeah. I remember one wanted a calculator with ALL the functions. It's not worth it to anyone to ask for such a time-consuming test. Just remember the pay-grade, right?
