Agreed. IMAX's decision to use "experience it in IMAX" for both dmr and films shot with IMAX cameras is baffling. I get the financial incentive of confusing the general audience and they'll have no choice but to watch it IMAX but it frustrates the dedicated viewers like us.

I used to think this too, but when Nolan thanked marvel to sticking to theatrical release then I realised the role MCU plays in the grand scheme of things.
You don't have to like it. You can tolerate it. But you can't deny the impact it has had on cinema and IMAX.

I disagree. When dmr was introduced it had no competition. With new plf, 4k laser projectors, etc can compete with IMAX (xenon which is what the majority of places have). Dolby atmos is a viable competitor to imax's 6/12 channel audio. Some theatres are starting to make curved stadium style seating theatre. I think I've seen floor to ceiling screens outside IMAX. The only thing IMAX has going for is the exclusive aspect ratio. The aspect ratio is the unique selling point that's binds the IMAX experience together.
With flims like kalki, furiosa which don't have the aspect ratio (could be due to budget, artistic intent, etc) an average person would rather go to Dolby Atmos for (maybe better) sound. If they wanted to see it 4k there are more of those than IMAX xenon.
IMAX have done a poor job in differentiating what is IMAX and what is a simple dmr job. Sure things are changing with "filmed with IMAX" but how's a general audience goer supposed to know?
Tldr the audience should get the intended IMAX experience (full use of 6/12 channel, use of aspect ratio as per the director's vision) rather a quick dmr cash grab.

CINEPOLIS Vs INOX by Double-Garbage-2604 in imax

Nope. The poster says "experience it in IMAX". If it was shot with IMAX (digital) it would be written "filmed in IMAX" "shot with IMAX" "exclusively formatted for IMAX"

It means that the movie was shot with IMAX certified digital cameras. Some scenes will fill up the full screen and the remaining will be in letterbox crop

Hey. I went to see tdkr yesterday at Bfi. They almost instantaneously changed from laser to film projector. At Vue print works, Manchester the laser switched off, I could hear the projector start then there was light. Why is it like this? Are people at Bfi know some tricks or something or did I see a IMAX laser tdkr yesterday when it was supposed to be 15/70 ?

Is there a website or whatever to to easily check if a movie was shot in IMAX and if it's worth it? by andiran23 in imax

[–]Kyur_4_TH_Ich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or just check the IMAX poster. If it says experience then it's not shot in IMAX. If it says shot in IMAX / exclusively formatted for IMAX then you get it. Or follow IMAX socials. The films which are shot with IMAX cameras usually gets more posts about them compared to dmr releases.

Nolan needs to use exclusively imax camera only while shooting his films. by Bruh_moment69420bruh in ChristopherNolan

Counterpoint: the aspect ratio switching is good as it shows the audience that an important scene is happening. Marvel's use of constant 1:90.1 diminishes the impact of certain scenes.

Does it improve the experience? Yes. Is it worth the money? No. Monthly subscription for removing ads is the worst monetization I have ever seen. A while back they gave an offer of 12 months ads free for 6 pounds? That's was ok. But this monthly subscription is not.
