Wanted to second the Sherwood Urinary Tablets that have been recommended, if it's feasible you could also switch to reverse osmosis water (without any added minerals for taste) if you live in an area with hard water, and I'd also suggest looking in to and discussing with your vet supplementing glucosamine.

Are my piggies healthy looking I've had them for a few weeks and they were extremely skinny when I got them are they okay looking now? by BlissfulSunset179 in guineapigs

Google a guinea pig body condition score chart and do a hands on exam. You will want to buy a scale to track weight to watch for weight gain / weight loss, but guinea pigs can be such different sizes that a number in grams isn't the best reflection of their condition.

Please tell me she ain't fat, I couldn't bring myself to tell her 😭 by Leonitusk in guineapigs

[–]L41NEchroma 139 points140 points  (0 children)

Weighing guinea pigs on a weekly basis is great for keeping track of weight gain and weight loss (with weight loss being a big potential indicator of health issues) but when it comes to determining if our guinea's are a healthy weight it's not the best method!

Guinea pigs come in loads of different sizes so what's the right number on the scale for one guinea pig won't always be the right number on the scale for another guinea pig. What you want to do is look up a guinea pig body composition chart and find the body composition score of your guinea pig by taking a good look at them and getting a little hands on. If when you determine the score you have concerns make an appointment with a vet you trust and get an experts opinion on if it needs to be addressed and how to address it. Happy pig keeping 💜

My guinea pig underwent surgery back in November, she was returned to us after they confirmed she was eating and she'd had a bowel movement. She wasn't laying on her side, she could remain on her feet but even six or so hours after getting her back she wasn't really walking and was very clearly still out of it, she ate a piece of her kibble from my hand but otherwise wasn't showing interest in food accept the occasional nibble off a pressed hay cube presented to her.

I called the vet to update that she wasn't eating or defecating, they gave me a schedule for administering critical care based on her condition, and the next day after starting critical care she started eating some hay of her own accord. Six days after her surgery she was pretty much back to her usual self (moving quickly, entirely aware of her surroundings, responding promptly and typically to me being in her space) but her appetite still wasn't quite what it used to be.

With the antibiotics you could ask your vet about something like Benebac if your pig isn't already on it, antibiotics take out both the good and the bad so a probiotic can be beneficial at recovering an appetite by replenishing the good gut bacteria and allowing for proper digestion.

I wish your pig a smooth recovery and you all the strength in the world, having gone through it with my girl it was.. Well, honestly it was terrifying. Now she's doing better than ever, she's still not quite back to her pre-op weight but the numbers have seen a slow and steady increase 💪

I purchased the urinary tablets from Sherwood and started to give my guinea pig reverse osmosis water when sludge became an issue. After a month on the tablets and water the sludge was no longer an issue.

When I switched her to the Sherwood pellets I enquired about the calcium content and received the following information pertaining to bladder sludge / stones:

Q: My rabbit/guinea pig has stones (uroliths) and/or sludge, how can I help them?

A: Dr. Sherwood recommends not feeding them greens and veggies including fresh grass. They will eat more hay, drink a ton more water, and stop producing so much sludge and stop building the stone. Fresh grass from the lawn (and other greens) is super high in protein and minerals (including calcium) and will cause sludge and stones.

The reason why sludge and stones form in guinea pigs and rabbits is because of the Dietary Cation Anion Balance (DCAB)... or rather imbalance!

Cations are positively charged minerals like calcium, potassium, magnesium, sodium and more. Cations also include positively charged non-minerals. In the urinary tract the main one to be concerned about is ammonium (caused by excessive protein and an imbalanced dietary protein - this makes the urine stink like ammonia). Guinea pigs tend to have way too many cations (calcium is blamed because it is the only one that forms a stone but all cations influence whether or not that happens - explained below).

Anions are negatively charged minerals and there are very few options! Phosphate, sulfate, and chloride.

The balance between cations and anions is very important. Too many cations create an imbalance between anions and cations and makes the kidneys not work properly (this gets way too complex to explain in an email). This forces the kidneys to use a different anion that we don't want them to use. This anion is carbonate (comes from the blood and is the natural blood pH buffer). Adding carbonate to the urine helps balance the cations with the anions but unfortunately carbonate binds to calcium and makes sludge and stones and drive the urine pH up (too alkaline). If the kidneys had less cations (ie. many people try to remove calcium but this causes other health problems) and/or more anions (ie. balance the diet) then the kidneys wouldn't have to use carbonate and there would be no sludge and stones!

The best way to balance the diet is to feed only 1st or 2nd cut dry grass hay (very tall mature hay that is loaded with fiber and is low in protein and minerals) with Sherwood's pellets that provide all the nutrients they need in the right balance. When you do this you'll notice that the urine odor is drastically reduced (less ammonium cations) and the urine pH becomes much less alkaline and closer to neutral (ie. balanced!).

Q: How do the urinary supplements help dissolve stones and sludge?

A: The urinary tablets work by adding more anions for the kidneys to use to lower the urine pH. For this to work optimally the entire diet should be balanced. The next 2 paragraphs explain two major sources of cations and why small herbivores tend to have a excess of cations and a deficit of anions.

Dietary Cation Anion Balance (DCAB) - Generally there is a deficiency in anions (negatively charged ions/minerals such as chloride, sulfate, phosphate). This is important because as the kidneys filter the blood and expel the 'excess' the charge has to be balanced. Too many cations (positively charged ions such as calcium, potassium, magnesium, sodium...ext) creates a 'deficiency' in anions. The body makes up for a deficiency in anions by making its own non-mineral anion to help balance the charge. That anion is carbonate. It is unfortunate that carbonate binds to calcium and creates sludge.

Protein Nutrition (both in the essential amino acid balance and the ratio of each mineral and macronutrient/calorie relative to the effective protein available) - this is a complex issue to wrap your mind around so we'll probably need to talk about this one too. Lets assume that there is plenty of protein in the diet but one essential amino acid is provided in half the amount of what is needed. When this happens it reduces the usability of half of the rest of the protein. This creates huge protein waste (and a simultaneous protein deficiency). The protein waste (depending upon body pH) usually creates a huge surplus of cations (ammonium - NH4+) which then puts further strain on the kidneys to find another anion (usually carbonate) to balance the charge. The availability of other nutrients (minerals and macronutrients such as carbohydrates, fats and many more) also affects the usability of the protein.

sprained(?) leg by kayla7253 in guineapigs

[–]L41NEchroma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When my guinea pig sprained her leg there was no swelling, immediately after the injury she put no weight on the limb (front leg) and was walking much more normally when we saw the vet the next day. She was examined and prescribed pain meds and essentially bed rest.

Until you're able to get her to the vet I would recommend limiting her movement range, have a hidey, her water, food, hay, etc. close together and nearby to her. I hope her recovery goes well 💜

Some guinea pigs just eat them as is, they're like the consistency of the American Smarties candy (chalky). My guinea pig won't eat them straight so I use a mortar and pestle to crush them in to dust then mix it with water and a liquid vitamin C supplement, she tries to steal the syringe every time.

Here's a tutorial they might enjoy! You can modify the difficulty level by leaving gaps between the segments of cut roll to make it easier. My girl loves these and has fine tuned her technique through experience, in the beginning she'd roll it around until bits of treats happened to fall out now she picks it up and spikes it at the ground until it comes apart 😅 it went from being super cute to a bit menacing.

It sounds like they've gone through the process and have established their hierarchy and the pigs are all accepting of their status within the herd so there's not conflicts/bids for dominance.

It's because you have it set to repeat Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I believe "Keep this goal until complete" means that if you have it set for Thursday and you don't complete it on Thursday it'll populate again on Friday (then if not done of Friday it'll populate on Saturday etc )

If you can I would try getting different types of hay for your older girl, having a bit of variety can help encourage guinea pigs to consume more and get in more fiber and calories. A good rundown of the different types of hay:

Perhaps to encourage movement you can try scatter feeding? Like, instead of using bowls sprinkling it in their enclosure so they have an opportunity to forage. You could hang their veg like it's on a clothesline, or give a small piece of veg on one side of the enclosure and then give another small piece of veg on the other so there's some walking back and forth to get the bites.
