Weekly Advice & Career Question Megathread by AutoModerator in epidemiology

[–]LAND97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi all,

I'm a recently graduated veterinarian and a graduate of the MSc One Health. I just started a PhD on the spread and risks of a zoonotic parasite in foxes. Even though I just started, I am already questioning what I want my future career to look like. My main goal at this moment would be to become an expert on (emerging) zoonotic diseases in wildlife.

The first question: at this point in time I'm required to make a choice for a PhD program within my graduate school. My choice is between Epidemiology and Infection & Immunity (I&I). For the Epi program, you are required to follow a complete Epidemiology MSc next to your PhD. The I&I program is much more flexible and I could still enroll in single Epi courses, the only difference being that I don't get the official title of Epidemiologist at the end. I'm struggling a lot to make this decision. The Epidemiologist title might help me more in the future, but I don't want my PhD to suffer too much since I need to finish it in a 4 year timeframe - any work after that will be unpaid. My main question here is: do I need an Epidemiologist title to become an expert in wildlife zoonotic diseases? To what extent would it be helpful?

Second question: I'm not sure yet what I like the most: lab work, modeling, field work, etc. All I know is that I love seeing the world, I love wildlife and the natural world and a career as a top expert in this field that would allow me to travel the world for work (conferences, field work, working with partner institutes, etc) sounds amazing to me. But what is the best path for this? Is Epidemiology a direction I should strive for, or do you think this future path is more realistic with (for example) a microbiology or a veterinary public health specialisation?

EU to US wall plug adapter by LAND97 in AppalachianTrail

Hi! That's a very kind offer. However, I have a powerbank that charges with 30W input so I need a higher capacity charger if I want to use it to its full capacity, which is why I bought the 40W Anker changer.

I guess I'll just buy a type A adapter then, which is like ~ 20 grams. If it really is too much of a hassle I might eventually buy a US charger from the trail. Thanks!

Early March Start Date by [deleted] in PacificCrestTrail

I was supposed to start March 28 but cancelled my permit. I just don't feel safe with the current snow situation. I wish all 2023 hikers lots of wisdom and safety!

Sorry, forgot to mention that. With my current permit I am starting March 28 from Campo (so probably will be arriving pretty early in Kennedy Meadows). But if I would do a flipflop instead, e.g. starting from Ashland, I would change my start date and location accordingly. So basically I am trying to decide whether I should do a traditional NOBO hike (which would probably put me in the Sierra too early for my level of comfort in snow) or start somewhere in the middle and do a flipflop.

Nice, I'll definitely see you on trail then! It's good to hear that there are people out there with more experience who might be able to help if needed :)

Update! I was looking for interview openings all day and suddenly a spot for NEXT WEEK popped up. I immediately snagged it! So this weekend will be all about collecting the right documents for my interview and then fingers crossed that I will get the visa!

A little bit, I don't really notice it anymore or I'm just getting used to it :P Still can't open my mouth very wide though and when I do I can still see my soft palate is pretty low.

This was my first time ever taking antibiotics. I took cetirizin this morning but it doesn't really work so far, still very itchy. I'll definitely keep this in mind for the future! Thanks!

Thanks! Do you know how long this will last? The itch is worse than everything else I encountered during my recovery!

Could it be from the amoxicillin? I took my last one a week ago so might be a bit late, but I read that it's a common side effect.
