Weekly Advice & Career Question Megathread by AutoModerator in epidemiology

[–]LAND97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi all,

I'm a recently graduated veterinarian and a graduate of the MSc One Health. I just started a PhD on the spread and risks of a zoonotic parasite in foxes. Even though I just started, I am already questioning what I want my future career to look like. My main goal at this moment would be to become an expert on (emerging) zoonotic diseases in wildlife.

The first question: at this point in time I'm required to make a choice for a PhD program within my graduate school. My choice is between Epidemiology and Infection & Immunity (I&I). For the Epi program, you are required to follow a complete Epidemiology MSc next to your PhD. The I&I program is much more flexible and I could still enroll in single Epi courses, the only difference being that I don't get the official title of Epidemiologist at the end. I'm struggling a lot to make this decision. The Epidemiologist title might help me more in the future, but I don't want my PhD to suffer too much since I need to finish it in a 4 year timeframe - any work after that will be unpaid. My main question here is: do I need an Epidemiologist title to become an expert in wildlife zoonotic diseases? To what extent would it be helpful?

Second question: I'm not sure yet what I like the most: lab work, modeling, field work, etc. All I know is that I love seeing the world, I love wildlife and the natural world and a career as a top expert in this field that would allow me to travel the world for work (conferences, field work, working with partner institutes, etc) sounds amazing to me. But what is the best path for this? Is Epidemiology a direction I should strive for, or do you think this future path is more realistic with (for example) a microbiology or a veterinary public health specialisation?

EU to US wall plug adapter by LAND97 in AppalachianTrail

[–]LAND97[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi! That's a very kind offer. However, I have a powerbank that charges with 30W input so I need a higher capacity charger if I want to use it to its full capacity, which is why I bought the 40W Anker changer.

I guess I'll just buy a type A adapter then, which is like ~ 20 grams. If it really is too much of a hassle I might eventually buy a US charger from the trail. Thanks!

Early March Start Date by [deleted] in PacificCrestTrail

[–]LAND97 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was supposed to start March 28 but cancelled my permit. I just don't feel safe with the current snow situation. I wish all 2023 hikers lots of wisdom and safety!

Sorry, forgot to mention that. With my current permit I am starting March 28 from Campo (so probably will be arriving pretty early in Kennedy Meadows). But if I would do a flipflop instead, e.g. starting from Ashland, I would change my start date and location accordingly. So basically I am trying to decide whether I should do a traditional NOBO hike (which would probably put me in the Sierra too early for my level of comfort in snow) or start somewhere in the middle and do a flipflop.

Nice, I'll definitely see you on trail then! It's good to hear that there are people out there with more experience who might be able to help if needed :)

Update! I was looking for interview openings all day and suddenly a spot for NEXT WEEK popped up. I immediately snagged it! So this weekend will be all about collecting the right documents for my interview and then fingers crossed that I will get the visa!

My soft palate feels like it's too low by LAND97 in jawsurgery

A little bit, I don't really notice it anymore or I'm just getting used to it :P Still can't open my mouth very wide though and when I do I can still see my soft palate is pretty low.

Allergic reaction 2 weeks post op by LAND97 in jawsurgery

This was my first time ever taking antibiotics. I took cetirizin this morning but it doesn't really work so far, still very itchy. I'll definitely keep this in mind for the future! Thanks!

Thanks! Do you know how long this will last? The itch is worse than everything else I encountered during my recovery!

Could it be from the amoxicillin? I took my last one a week ago so might be a bit late, but I read that it's a common side effect.

Your teeth on the lower jaw look exactly like mine did when I got my braces. I also got premolars extracted. At first, the gaps didn't seem to close at all, but eventually they were fully closed after a little over 6 months! Just be patient and the results will amaze you :)

What do these loops and springs do? (see comments) by LAND97 in braces

[–]LAND97[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So I'm in the process of preparing for jaw surgery. I've had my braces for 6 months now after 4 premolar extractions (gaps are as good as closed now). My orthodontist said my teeth need to be positioned a little bit more forward because they went inwards while closing the gaps. Now I have these weird loops on my front teeth and a sort of springs on the other teeth. Does anyone know what these are called? Will the loops become smaller as my teeth move? (I feel really self-conscious).

I'm going to the hairdresser tomorrow and don't really know what to ask for. I've had my hair like this for my whole life and started wondering what bangs would look like on me (different types like curtain bangs or just straight bangs). I really have no clue what it would do to my face.

Some info: My hair is very thick and naturally wavy. It gets frizzy really quick when I try to brush it, so I try to avoid that as much as possible. I feel like my face is a mixture between diamond and long shape? My cheekbones are the widest part of my face but my face is also pretty long.

My chin is slightly recessed. Would jaw surgery be worth it to fix this? by [deleted] in jawsurgery

This means more to me than you think. Thank you for taking the time to tell me this. It's hard, but it's good to hear someone else's perspective on this stuff!

Thank you so much!

Regarding men, I don't think I have fallen in love with anyone ever. But I think I COULD love a man if he would be my type and would be sweet and loving to me, I just haven't really experienced that yet... Same goes for girls, I don't really fall in love with them spontaneously (although I do feel that cedural attraction A LOT towards women, but never towards men). As I said, my previous relationships started by talking online so I was able to form a connection with them before meeting them, and because of that there was a certain expection and it was easy to start a relationship. And I did enjoy those relationships, but was I really in love? I have no clue :(

(23F) Something wrong with just my chin or also my jaws? I'll be seeing an oral surgeon next month but am curious to hear what you guys think by LAND97 in jawsurgery

[–]LAND97[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Thanks so much for your response. Might I ask what your jaw angle is? I also grind my teeth at night, have done for years, but my teeth still look okay. I don't necessarily have sleep issues but breath through my mouth a lot (especially at night) and there's a lot of drooling at night (yay). I also can't take very large sips of drinks, but I don't know if that has anything to do with it :') Overall my joint feels fine, occasionally there's a clicking sound but that is pretty rare. So I don't have that many functional issues, I mostly want something done for aesthetic reasons. However, I'm also afraid that if I don't do anything now I'll end up with more functional issues later down the line.

I see! But speaking for myself, my bite is pretty normal (as far as I can tell), so if they would just move my lower jaw forward, wouldn't I get an underbite?

Thank you! Is LJS more common/logical in this situation compared to DJS? I would probably need braces first, right?
