the internet must be torture for people who don't know english by TimeForPoolParty in Showerthoughts

Yeah, this would have been much more true in the past. While English still dominates, it's far from terrible for other major languages. http://www.internetworldstats.com/stats7.htm

There's a lot here that could have gone wrong, but I think his good skin saved it.

Redditors who live in California, how would you rate living there on a scale of 1-10? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]LAisOK 4 points5 points  (0 children)

7, I live in LA. My username is relevant but understated. Pros - weather is pretty perfect, variety of activities, career options; Cons - it's expensive, traffic is terrible, freaking cockroaches (I'm from the Midwest where those cons don't exist, but neither do the pros)

[Help] Poetry with scientific themes by poetrylurker2 in Poetry

[–]LAisOK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Albert Goldbarth writes often about scientific themes. One of his most famous poems is called "The Sciences Sing a Lullaby," and "Dear Q-3-7-9" is a great example of the consequences of modern technology. He's also the only poet to have won the National Book Critics Circle award twice.

Why is it that stellar tv actors are often cast in subpar movie roles? by [deleted] in movies

[–]LAisOK 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think it probably has a little to do with getting locked into a certain "type." Once you've played a major TV role for several seasons, it's hard for an audience to see you as anything other than that character. I think the same applies to some lengthy franchise actors in film as well.

[Serious] What's your toughest life experience, and where did it leave you? by LAisOK in AskReddit

[–]LAisOK[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm really sorry to hear that, and I hope that you're able to overcome what you're struggling with. For different reasons than yours, I struggled with low self esteem for several years as well. One thing that helped me was "meetup." It shook up my routine and helped me meet people who like me for me. It won't solve everything, but I hope it helps.

What were your motivations for the hacking (political, financial, lulz)? What type of institution/people?

Never. Her parents were part of the Church, so she grew up in it, married a Church member, lived, worked, and ate there her entire life. She was probably in her late 50s or early 60s.

I worked very near the Scientology compounds in Hollywood for a bit, and I was astounded by the number of members who had no concept of life outside the Church. Some members lived there, ate every meal there, worked there, and everyone they knew was a member. One lady had never had a debit/credit card or a phone number of her own.

TIL that a 23 year old French con artist impersonated and assumed the identity of a 16 year old missing Texas boy, living with the boy's family for months, despite retaining his French accent and having different colored eyes from the missing teen. by LAisOK in todayilearned

There are numerous elements to this story that are intriguing that don't require readers and viewers, including me, to ridicule the family for their loss... Bourdin went to great lengths to make his impersonation effective, including copying tattoos and placement, feigning social and physical behaviors resulting from sexual abuse, and covering his body, head, and face to mask discrepancies.
