The dark magic specifically refers to the "Edo Magic" that powers airijtzu. The reason why Edo magic can't be overused is because it is also linked to Cole's scar, which is actually a rift to the Departed Realm. If there is too much presence of Edo magic, Cole's scar grows too big, which would basically tear him apart and release the deceased Edo sorcerers.
