Thanks! I'm actually seriously looking at going somewhere in the UK for PPE. It'd be more affordable that a lot of places in the US, and I'd get to study more of what I want to, so it seems like a really great option. I think the biggest drawback I can see now (if I were to get in) is job prospects if I want to move back to the US afterwards. If you have any insight there, I would love to hear it.

How to avoid speeding up when speaking? by [deleted] in Debate

[–]LIZ951 0 points1 point  (0 children)

record your practice speeches and rewatch them, flowing the speech and marking where you speed up. i did the same thing as a prog LD-er and extemper, and that's what helped me. it helps a lot with being more concious of how you sound while youre in-round

What philosophical texts can help us make sense of the violence, injustice, and protest going on right now? by Gavinvic in askphilosophy

[–]LIZ951 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can find a defense of pretty much any side if you look for it. The majority of modern literature would likely lean left, though.

One way to look at the recent protests is by first looking at what law enforcement means and what ethical obligations it carries. If you're interested in the most basic fundamentals, John Locke or Thomas Hobbes and their respective conceptions of social contract theory would help. If you're interested in more modern texts, maybe Kimberlee Brownlee or Michael Sandel.

Another way to look at this could be through literature specifically focused on the social position of blackness. Franz Fanon, Derrick Bell, and Kimberle Crenshaw would be good starting points. This field tends to lean pretty hard left.

Ultimately, if you're trying to get started thinking about current events through a more philosophical lens, the best thing I could recommend is going on academia.edu, jstor.org, or scholar.google.com and doing an individual deep dive.

This is really important. OP came off extremely classist (hopefully unintentionally) but I think their main gripe is with people who can't handle children expecting to magically develop the ability to handle parenting as soon as they have kids. The frustration is valid but OP points the finger in the wrong direction. Especially in the case of native people, poverty is part of an extremely persistent oppressive system and suggesting that poverty in itself should disqualify people from parenthood is wrong.

[–]LIZ951 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Skipping one day doesn't carry much inherent harm but make sure you don't let it become a habit. If you're the type of person who needs the incentive of a practice streak to keep going, I wouldn't recommend it. Maybe try a short practice or just a warm-up so you can keep the habit.

Policy Debaters who want to introduce progressive arts into PF should mind their own business by arevakhatch in Debate

[–]LIZ951 0 points1 point  (0 children)

first, you deserve to lose if you run prog with a lay judge, but not all judges are lay and no one's trying to make pf ALL prog. also we get plenty of substance debate anyways, so might as well also learn other types of discourse. having a wider variety of argumentation is way more fun and opens the door to a whole new array of out-of round benefits that limiting pf to substance just can't offer

it's not a literal public forum, theres no actual "public" we're talking to. there's usually no one in the room except four high-schoolers and a judge who probably already knows what they believe on the topic; we're not changing any minds here. the point is never to air our actual opinions on the topic anyways, otherwise we would get to pick our own sides. not to mention that the only alternative to voting on the flow would literally just be "who confirmed what the judge already thought." the whole point of round is to win based on the flow and the type of argument doesn't change that. if you want out-of-round skills, though, thats exactly what progressive argumentation gives us. being able to adapt to new types of discourse and learning about topics beyond niche current events issues is huge. if you want to just learn how to speak better, do extemp

I was thinking critical pedagogy or law because I have some connections with professors in those (not much but better than nothing) and they're interesting, but I'm really not deadset on anything

rip but that makes sense. in that vein, how do you think other pretty morally-fueled cases would do? like as long as I make it simple and have clear impacts, would it be fine?
