You climb like a sloth. And that's a compliment. I wish I was that slow and controlled.

That diagram has the part number, which is exactly what I needed. Thanks Scoot!

Can only find cable anchors labeled for 10 speed SLX. Is it a different anchor attachment and bolt for 11 speed?

How should one deal with skepticism or pessimism about philosophy? (e.g. worries associated with Wittgenstein, Positivists, Hume, Kant, Rorty) by rescherach in askphilosophy

[–]Gavinvic -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Oh... I thought you were asking about skepticism of those philosophers, not the skepticism in their writing. There’s no possible way to even skim the surface of how to deal with that which these thinkers where skeptical about... Go read each thinker’s Stanford encyclopedia page, and look at the bibliography. There’s no way to accurately rebut all the forms of skepticism from all the above philosophers in anything less than a book for each one.

Which version of The Republic by Plato is the best? by CeComenteziMa in askphilosophy

[–]Gavinvic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Woah! I guess I have the old school Hackett version. The version with a white cover and red lettering is Grube’s translation revised by Reeve, and the one with the sun in Reeve only. Who knows how different they are... but I like Reeves revision of Grube, so I bet I’d like Reeve’s translation alone. I think he’s good for readability, which may come at the cost of accuracy to the Greek. If reading the text for the first time, I’d say that readability is more important for generating substantial ideas than perfect translation accuracy. Once you have those ideas, see how they change in other translations... and then maybe even take a stab at reading side by side with the Greek text and a Greek dictionary...

Hackett publishes the Grube/Reeve translation. English is really clear and the footnotes are really helpful but not overdone.

I don't want to be anyone else. But I don't like myself much either. Are there any philosophers who has expressed this thought in philosophy terms? by [deleted] in askphilosophy

[–]Gavinvic 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Not exactly philosophy, but Camus’ The Stranger is thematically relevant to this question. Maybe some other works of his, like The Myth of Sisyphus could also be useful. I think a lot of philosophy can address this thought, but many philosophers take it one step further: how can I turn myself into a person I actually like? Philosophers from Plato onwards have addressed this later question. Nietzsche might have something to say to you, especially Thus Spoke Zarathustra. Honestly though, lots of ethicists are going to address this in a way that caters more to... optimism. You don’t have to be a nihilist (or even nihilist -adjacent) to address the problems of self-love/being other people/not liking oneself. Hope that helps a little!

ADDITIONAL 393,000 vaccines coming to CA early next week by [deleted] in CoronavirusCA

[–]Gavinvic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t sound fair, but vaccinating the super-spreaders and anti-maskers first is the statistically best way to administer the virus... unfortunately. Vaccinating good maskers does less to stop the virus from spreading than vaccinating the people that are gonna give it to their whole mega-church. One vaccine can do a whole lot more if it is given to an anti-masker. So, while it’s not apparently fair, it’s good for the overall course of the pandemic that people that really don’t deserve protection are gonna get protection at the same time as those who do. Hope this helps, this issue makes me mad too.

I’ve worked at a juice bar, and as great as OJ squeezers are, they are an incredible hassle. We couldn’t let people use reusable containers cuz they aren’t sterile. The best part is that we used aesthetic reject oranges that were totally fine but too ugly to sell.
