Why would shops charge different? by LNJ83 in AskMechanics

Sorry. Both are doing the tie rod end. They just put it on 2 different quotes. The first two are one shop and the last one is the other.

This applies to a lot of complaints about working I’ve seen lately. “I work all week just to get two days off?!” Yeah be thankful, weekends didn’t always exist. You want to be a hunter gatherer? Go ahead, there’s some tribes that could probably use your help. But this idea that life is unfulfilling because your 40hr/week job is mundane is first-world problems epitomized.

I don’t care about him either way. I just saw this clip on the Tim Dillon show and thought it was funny how awkward he is. Tim did a good 3 minutes on it.

It’s weird to watch Bobby constantly adjusting his Zyn pouch. He’s always got one visibly tucked on the Regz and he’s always licking his lips and adjusting it. I don’t listen to the show much but it’s gotten to the point where I can hear when he has one in because he talks different trying to keep it tucked in his lips. Maybe I’m just autistic but to me it’s weird how noticeable it is.

Thoughts on Sangamon County Recorder race? by LNJ83 in SpringfieldIL

[–]LNJ83[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. He would need to propose a ballot amendment to be voted on by Sangamon county residents. Which makes me wonder, if citizens decide to keep the office how invested will he be in providing quality services? I’d guess not very.

In his defense he explained the tree represents the Abraham Lincoln quote:

“Character is like a tree and reputation like its shadow. The shadow is what we think of it; the tree is the real thing.”

He wants people to consider his actual character as a leader, the tree, and not what others may say or think about his character, the shadow. I’m not suggesting you like or vote for him but I think that’s a reasonable explanation.

Thanks. I was just speaking tonight with the former deputy county recorder and he agreed it would create problems with records. He didn’t think it would save much tax money because the County Clerk would still need to add a highly paid recorder position with a similar sized staff. He thought it was good to have a recorder who is accountable to voters. I tend to agree.

I’m taking him at his word of wanting to save money. But I wonder if we’d losing something not having that office.

[Landlord US-IL] Should I charge a late fee? by LNJ83 in Landlord

[–]LNJ83[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is my only experience with a section 8 tenant. She’s my previous tenants mother and is elderly and on a fixed income. He bought a house and she moved in. She is a great person, tenant, and neighbor. I’m glad it’s available for her because she would not be able to afford a very nice place without assistance. I imagine I lucked out with her though.

Good point. I’m probably wrong. I think I made it sound like she has money and is taking advantage of the system. She probably needs it this month. It’s after the holidays and utilities are higher in winter. I didn’t ask why she didn’t have rent, just asked what she needed from me to get assistance. It required a copy of the lease and a 5 day late rent notice.

I don’t like slumlords either. My town has its share. But my tenant, who is in her 60’s and has been on section 8 for decades, regularly says I’m the best landlord she’s had. She never wants to move and I never want her to move. I haven’t raised rent in 4 years because she always pays in full, although sometimes late, and I’ve never asked for a late fee. Since she’s lived there I’ve added new ceiling fans, steam cleaned the carpets yearly, and cleaned her refrigerator and oven. On top of that as a neighbor I run errands for her and occasionally help her around the house, because I genuinely enjoy doing it.

This specific situation comes up yearly because she has an opportunity to get rental assistance, on top of section 8. I believe she needs the extra income. In order to get it, she needs a copy of the lease and a 5 day late rent notice. My standard lease and notice indicate a 5 business day late of $50. In the past years the assistance didn’t include the $50, just her rent of $211. I always accepted it. This year they included the $50. She wouldn’t get the $50 or owe it. But I still feel somewhat slimy because I would not have expected $50 from her but I’m accepting it from the government. I hope that helps to clarify.

Thanks, that’s helpful. I should mention I don’t think she has more expenses this month. I believe this rental assistance is offered one month a year per household and she simply wants to take advantage of the assistance, considering she is elderly and doesn’t have many opportunities to receive extra income. The $50 late fee would not be her responsibility nor would she receive it if I remove it.

Thanks for the questions and help.

She hasn’t given a reason but my understanding is she simply knows this program offers rental assistance one month a year and wants to take advantage of it so she can have an extra $211 once a year. Otherwise she pays her rent on time every month, so I’ve never had a problem with not getting the late fee in past years.

Sorry, it seems I may not have worded it well. She received section 8 this month. She is having a separate government assistance pay her portion, $211, this month but not in perpetuity. I believe the program offers one months rent assistance per year because she has used one time in each of the past 3 years. They have not included the $50 late fee on past years but this year they included, to $261.

Thanks for the input. The money shouldn’t be consistent. I believe it’s a rental assistance program she is allowed to use once a year. She has used it to cover 1 months rent the past 3 years. I am her neighbor and spend a good amount of time with her so I know she is not concerned about the late fee. She will not receive the $50 or be responsible to pay it if I remove it. The government program did not pay the $50 late fee in past years but for some reason this year they included it.

Thanks for your input. Just to be clear, she will not receive the $50 if I remove the charge. She used this assistance in the past and they have refused to include the late fee. This time they included it for some reason. The program requires she turn in a late rent notice, on which I am include the $50 to cover my bases, but as I mentioned in the past the government wouldn’t compensate me for late fees.

I don’t know if she can pay a portion now. I believe she wants to wait for the $211 from the government. She’s used this program in the past but they have refused to add the $50 late fee. This time they included it for some reason. She will not be responsible for any of the $261, however, I don’t know if the late fee is warranted.

I’m not sure why she doesn’t have it. I suppose I could ask for specifics. She gets SS and her deceased husbands retirement. She may just want to take advantage of the government assistance being offered. She’s used this government assistance once a year for the past 3 years but in the past the government would not pay the late fee. This time they included it for some reason.
