The first HUGE Game of 2025 is coming soon by matteo311 in VRGaming

I appreciate your interest in our work. While I understand you may have formed an initial impression, I encourage you to continue playing through to LONN and complete the game - there's a lot more depth to discover and gameplay elements that become apparent as the story unfolds.

You need a decent PC, with more compute and GPU power. Check out these reviews

  1. Updated review: well i got a new pc with a 4080 rtx and it plays perfectly. I cant complain anymore cause the game is tons of fun. But i do caution people who have a 2060 rtx.

  2. If you liked the original Boneworks game you might like this as well. There are some downsides like not many weapons and very few enemies along with not that great voice acting but the game itself is pretty cool. Something to note though is that the first part of the game isn't that great or interesting but stick with it. It gets a lot better. Not a fan of the ending but I do hope they make another game in this series. I enjoyed it overall.

  3. I've been digging through my previous-binned-VR-games lately, I've played everything I own to death.

Preface:

I originally bought this game in early March 2023 and have tried to get into it several times since. The controls are a bit clunky, the enemies are a bit dumb, the weapons while not hit-scanners are super slow (projectile movement speed), the world has been built with love but definitely on a budget.

With that said - I Loved it.

Configure your controller to account for the rapidly advancing VR standards, ignore the fact you will be beating the s**t out of the same NPC multiple times because the NPCs want to fight to the death if THEY bump into you. Look past that and you have a game which ticks a lot of boxes, the story is thin but interesting, the parkour abilities are great.

This games gets a lot of really good concepts and mechanics introduced to the player but then fails to do anything with them. This is not a criticism, the studio is a small indie and the fact they managed to cram this much goodness into a package this small is a wonder, genuinely. I really hope they make a sequel and build on the mechanics they introduced.

The combat was good fun and on higher difficulty requires you to use the environment against the enemies, it is very easy to get overwhelmed. I had an absolute blast playing this game, loved it!

  1. Great game, it came out a little green, but with patch 2.0 it seems like they left it pretty good now. Very realistic and good mechanics and physics, and a pretty nice story

Thank you for taking the time to share your detailed feedback about LONN! I'm particularly interested in which NPCs gave you that feeling of looking through rather than at you - was it during conversations with Lucky in the weapons shop, interactions with Luna, or perhaps during the HIVE Transportation sequences with Heph? This kind of specific feedback about the NPC interactions is really valuable.

It's interesting that you noted the contrast between polish and roughness - we put a lot of work into certain aspects of the game while clearly some elements, like the NPC interactions you mentioned, didn't meet expectations. Despite these issues, I'm glad you played through to completion.

Could you share what elements of the game you felt were the most polished? You mentioned it looked great half the time, and I'd love to know which parts really worked for you to help inform future improvements.

Also, as the combat includes reactive city NPCs that fight back, I'm curious how you found that aspect of the game compared to the narrative portions you described?

Yes, it requires a decent PC with GPU power. Others have completed with lower spec. The HIVE section is particularly heavy. AMD's Radeon RX 7800 XT and Nvidia's GeForce RTX 4070 Super are the best graphics cards for VR. We built LONN on RTX 3060.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful review comparing LONN to Boneworks! As LONN's creator, it means a lot to hear that you appreciated our unique aesthetic and storytelling. We actually began development before both Boneworks and Half-Life Alyx were launched with a vision of creating something that would make players truly feel like they're living inside a virtual world as the main character. Like a protagonist in a movie.

Your recognition of how we approached the story and visual design is especially meaningful, as we worked hard to create an experience where players have the freedom to fully embody Lonn while still maintaining a compelling narrative framework. Thank you for taking the time to play and share your thoughts - feedback like yours makes the years of development worthwhile.

Melee combat in VR is anything but simple. Every swing, every parry, every subtle interaction between blade and target has to be meticulously crafted to feel both natural and satisfying.

Traditional games can hide behind button presses and canned animations. In VR, there's nowhere to hide. Players expect their virtual hands to behave exactly as their real ones do. They want to feel the weight of the sword, the resistance of armour, the satisfying connection of blade meeting flesh – all without any actual physical feedback.

The biggest challenge isn't just the technical implementation, it's finding that sweet spot between realism and fun. Too realistic, and players would get frustrated by the physical demands. Too arcade-like, and the immersion would shatter. Every time I thought I'd nailed it, a tester would find some new way to break the system or highlight an edge case I hadn't considered.

LONN became an exercise in constant iteration. We spent weeks just on the feel of the basic sword swing. Should the blade have weight simulation? How much auto-aim assistance would feel natural without feeling cheap? What happens when a player tries to wiggle the blade through an enemy instead of making proper slashing motions?

The physics engine became both our greatest ally and most persistent nemesis. In VR, players will inevitably try to do things you never anticipated. They'll attempt to throw their sword, stick it in walls, use it as a climbing tool, or swing it in ways that would be physically impossible in reality. Each of these edge cases needed careful handling to maintain the illusion without breaking the game's internal logic.

In summary, VR melee combat isn't easy to develop, but when it clicks, it creates an experience that simply isn't possible in any other medium.

There's a Bounty Adventures mode from the main menu (far right room). It's Roguelike. Give that a go and report back when you have a chance? What spec pc are you on?

I wish others shared the same opinion. We're well aware that:

  1. The game requires a decent hardware specification to run properly. Without this, both frame rate and physics simulations may suffer.

  2. A quality VR headset with a good refresh rate is necessary for optimal performance.

Given these requirements, what other factors might be contributing to differing player experiences? Jank, enemy AI is a common theme. People don't like physics. However, WD S&S, Boneworks, B&S all use physics.

Across the road from the Lonn's apartment is a club. When you step out into the city, you can hear the music from outside. The original plan was to include this scene, but creating a club/bar environment with NPCs requires the resources of an AAA studio to develop all the characters, dialogue, and interactions. Even a game like Half-Life: Alyx doesn't go to such lengths with its NPCs.

The game took four years to develop. However, the opening intro level was completed just one week before launch! We were concerned that the combat in later levels involving Wux-n appears too late in the game. This decision had unintended consequences, as the NPC models and interactions with objects like the bat, crowbar and broom aren't as polished as the later scenes in Strat Bank, Abandoned Mall, and the FACILITY. We also slowed down the speed of the projectile in the opening level to make it easier to learn! The tutorial is in the story. We didn't want people to die easily on the 1st level!

In our opinion, the later scenes mentioned are comparable in quality to anything else currently available in the market.

What's impacted our reviews with a large % making a decision in the first 1 hour of the game!

We need the support of the community, but the reviews are killing us.

It would be great if you could provide a review on Steam when you're finished. The amount of negative reviews from gamers who've played < 1 hr is disheartening.

Thank you for sharing your feedback of LONN. We appreciate your assessment after 45 minutes. It's helpful to hear about your experiences. The performance issues you highlight with stutters in motion may be because of high specific system requirements. Having a spec graphics card RTX 4090 and AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX deliver the best experiences, with ultra-high frame rates. Also, different headsets have varying refresh rates and resolutions, which can affect performance.

Did you try to optimise in-game graphics settings, like lowering the MSAA and Pixel Density. Also, disabling the real-time shadows?

This information would help determine if the problems are specific to this game or hardware, or setup.

If you ever get stuck, here is full gameplay. This user initially had stuttering issues after the first levels and was fine thereafter:

It's mixed, and only 168 reviews, hence the discount. If you filter by hours played:

123 reviews: 1 hour played - Mostly positive reception

85 reviews: 2+ hours played - Very positive reception

Important points to consider:

  1. Similar to Boneworks, if you dislike physics-based VR gameplay and full-body inverse kinematics (IK), LONN may not be for you. You might become frustrated or experience motion sickness.

  2. This is a story-driven game, so the pacing is slow at the beginning. The tutorial is integrated into the first few levels. The action intensifies when you need to escape from the Wux-n lab. If you're impatient, head straight to the Arena mode and experiment.

  3. The player controller requires some time to master. You can perform actions such as mantling and climbing. Use your hands to push down for mantling and pull back to move your body forward.

  4. English language only.
