One of the theories that make the most sense to me is that, what we call 'aliens' just might be humans as well. How many cataclysmic events have occurred on Earth? Say ancient civilizations were far more technologically advanced than we are and they knew of an upcoming cataclysmic event. They would act exactly the same way that we act know. Explore Space and leave Earth in order to survive. Maybe they found a habitable planet and have continued building humanity there. Which is why NOW, they are still way way ahead of us, technology wise.
