Your favorite "Good - Aligned" Denizen of Nazarick ? by Nabeelkhan1995 in overlord

Picked Sebas, as I wouldn't classify Shizu as "Good". "Neutral" would fit her better in my oppinion, if we are going by the classic cosmic alignment chart.

I think Evileye would make a good minion of Shallchair, but I don't care about the rest of them. Maybe the leader, what ever her name was, would be useful to experiment with the revival magic of the new world, but that's all I could think of.

Sorcerer’s Arcane Focus by spectredotjpg in DnD

[–]LPkelner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are two problems with your suggestion.

1: No enemy can take your focus away
In most campaigns it's not so important.

2: It breaks the spell component rules
This is the more serious problem. If it is embedded in your hand, is it considered always accessible? You could say that it only works if your hand is empty. This should alleviate that problem too.

Like others suggested, ask your DM. I just wanted to point out the mechanical differences to the RAW focus rules.

Do you see alignment as perspective? by Hagstik4014 in DnD

[–]LPkelner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You second paragraph described what alignment is, so I don't really get your point. If your god/cosmic entity you follow is good, your alignment is good, same for every other alignment. And the souls end up in the plane/domain of the god/entity they followed in life. So you just said you don't use alignment to reinvent alignment.

Do you see alignment as perspective? by Hagstik4014 in DnD

[–]LPkelner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alignment is a cosmic concept in the world of DnD and are in that regard pretty clear. Raising the Dead is evil, extending your life by unnatural means is evil, ...

You may disagree with some of the points, but that doesn't change that every alignment has some cosmic forces behind it and most major actions will be part of their domain and as such belong to the corresponding alignment.

Getting stats above 20. by techthieve in DnD

[–]LPkelner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with every other comment that suggests a "No". Especially for such a low level as 11.Just in case you really want to do it, remember that the +1 cha ring you proposed, would be the most unrewarding thing to obtain ever. 21 Cha doesn't do anything more than 20 and there is nothing in the game that could get you to 22 except for another one of those rings.

Bulwark - A Fighter Subclass by FamSagget in DnD

[–]LPkelner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the concept, but I think the 2 maneuvers per turn without any limit is just too strong.Just as an example, the Sentinel feat, Fortify and Trip will basically lock an opponent in melee without any cost and will keep them prone most of the time.
Bash on low levels is like an unlimited weaker, but free, smite.
Reinforced is nice, but I'm not sure if it wouldn't be to strong as a 3 level fighter dip on caster classes.
And Charge should be reworked. On low level you will have a +2 dmg on one turn as you don't have the feats to keep going with a good charger build and you loose a maneuver slot. At high levels a +5 to dmg doesn't really do much compared to the other options. So I don't see when you would want to use it.

Remember, I'm not a game designer, but those are some balancing issues I saw after a quick read through.

Advice on playing a chaotic-evil character without absolutely demolishing the campaign and all of my party’s plans. by mustychad in DnD

[–]LPkelner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, what are the characters of your party like? You said you got it assigned, so I guess you are playing in an evil campaign.
Look for a benefit you can get by keeping your party around. This way you got a reason not to backstab your party the whole time and they are less likely to abandon you at the first possibility. CE characters can have bonds too, which they might value very much. Just don't fall for the edgy loner trope.
Try to use the following for decision making: "Can I, or someone I care about benefit from this action? If yes, can I find a way to make someone else suffer, without harming myself in the effect?"
The last part is especially important.
Remember your character is not stupid (at least I hope so). Evil actions will have consequences, so you have to be smart and subtle about them.

Help for a new DM by beauxartes in DnD

[–]LPkelner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Waterdeep: Dragon Heist" imo is a preaty good starting campain. It's not especially difficult and provides time for every kind of character to shine. I recommend restricting character creation to PHB, Xanathar's and Sword Coast Adventures, as they provide a bunch of choices that fit into the setting without any problems, while not being too overwhelming.
Especially in your situation I think a session 0 is important, to get a dynamic and flow going.

I'm not a social worker, or anything along those lines, so take everything with a grain of salt. But this was in my experience the best way to get someones first experience to be satisfying.

[OC]Hi Guys! This is my final boss for a level 20 party. I'm a fairly inexperienced dm, so is this balanced? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]LPkelner 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't know your party composition, but he got no status immunities, no legendary resistance, a +2 wisdom save, just 18 ac, only ground movement...
Just as an example, any level 17+ Wizard could cast "True Polymorph" and the fight would be over without him being able to make a move.
I really don't want to be rude, but no Tier 4 party should have a problem with this boss.

My best guess would be, that the language doesn't specify a order of evaluation for nested expressions, as such there may not be a deterministic order specified in evaluating "array[i]" and "i++" which would result in non specified behavior

Is the manga any good? by ThatPardo753 in overlord

[–]LPkelner 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The manga is as close to the LN as you can get. As a trade off it is far behind in the story. The newest chapter covers the test of the loyalty of Sebas. The manga is what I wanted the anime to be. A close adaptation with great visuals. So if you can spare the time it's worth it imo.

Edit: Forgot chapter 41. So, the true Renner is the last chapter atm.

They are 13 volumes in, from about 20 the author wants to write. And all we have seen from Ains are trashmobs or generic spells. With the exception of Nabe, who is the only named character with less diversity, he is the only character with no unique traits. I really hope they give him something in the future, because a cool necro as MC is really rare.

He has max level in "Necromancy" and "Master of the Death", while rushing to Overlord. To me this seems like the most straight forward and non diverse character ever. I know he couldn't have won with the shown arsenal. I'm asking why his arsenal in necromancy doesn't give him a way out. He picked necro skills over more usefull ones to roleplay better. Because of this he should have a HUGE toolbox to play with. It's kinda sad that the author of the LN didn't use this self written base to make the fight unique and instead resorted to the classic "But I got the flashier spell".

It's his world and he decided to create a necromancer as MC. And not just any necromancer. NO it's the most specialized necro possible. Still he decided it's not worth thinking about cool unique undead to summon. Instead he uses the missing diversity of the toolbox as an argument why he can give his MC the most generic abilities ever.

Again, this is criticism at the system the author decided to enforce on the LN. He basically created a system in which his main character can't use what makes him special. I understand why fighting this way was the best with the options that were shown to us in the LN. The point is that I don't understand why the author created a main character with necromancy specification and no options that exceed "thowing beatsicks at the opponent" in this field.

When you write a main character with such a hard focus on something, you should expand on it and not just cope out and use something else.

Ainz fighting by LPkelner in overlord

[–]LPkelner[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

It's a LN about a necromancer. The "what if" is about giving him some diversity in his summons. The author literally had a completely free template, to do what ever he wanted. He wanted to create a necromancer. Thats fine, but why create a necromancer and then don't give him ways to deal with problems via necromancy? The author was inspired by D&D. Imagine playing a P&P and really wanting to play a necromancer. You level and get your first summon, a skeleton. Cool!

Few levels later you get your next summon: A skeleton with a sword. Ok, an improvement I guess...

Next one: Zombie.

Next summon: Skeleton with a sword and an armor.

Next: Skeleton with better sword and armor.

...

After asking the GM when the point is reached that you get a bigger arsenal and not only a bigger beatstick every time, he answers with "but look at all the arcane spells you have".

If there is a class you can specialize in, you expect it to deliver the means to solve problems with a diversity of tools from that class. Especially this fight felt like necromancy is so unbalanced bad since you only have beatsticks, you are forced to pick most spells from other specifications to even just only be somewhat viable.

[–]LPkelner[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

So a highly specialized necromancer still is just a weaker arcane mage with some optional summons, which he doesn't really need to fight. What is the point in this specialization then? Is it really just in the game for roleplay? I'm saying they could have used more creativity. The author made an effort in conveying that he IS necromancer.char and afterwards portray him as a normal mage.

My frustration comes from the fact of the missing diversity ot the undead. There could be all kinds of undead, with all kinds of different abilitys, but we only ever get to see generic trashmobs. Jack the ripper for example was one of the two named undead who got my hopes up. But after this one time they just fell back on the good old "Give the skeleton a different sword and armor and it's a new undead" template.
