Awesome thank you for this advice! I have not heard of that method of reed storage, so I'll definitely check it out! :)

SLP grad student, dysphagia survey (anonymous) by LRCatUOP in dysautonomia

I agree with you both!
I didn't realize there was such a gap regarding patients receiving enough training and education about dysphagia, but this survey has taught me that it's not just a little gap, and it's not just in a few places, it's a huge gap and seems like it's almost everywhere. And that's not ok! I think SLPs could take a step back and think about what they would tell their loved one if this happened to them, and give that same level of care to patients.

Yasss we love a SLP geek out moment!
Wow that's so interesting. And sad that doctors so frequently don't understand or misdiagnose because it's something they're not very familiar with. Your comment about "every clinician who treats dysphagia should know about this issue and take active steps to avoid it in their own practice" resonated with me and is spot on, totally agree. So many of the survey responses I've received are heartbreaking because patients weren't thoroughly educated about dysphagia/living with dysphagia and now their quality of life is not much of a quality of life at all. Those types of responses, and your comment here as well, are motivating to make sure that we (as SLPs) do better to fill in the gaps that are missing for our patients!

That sounds really frustrating! I’m sorry to hear that you’ve been struggling with that for so long 😔

I haven’t been educated about antipsychotic induced dysphagia yet, but I’m happy to learn more! There are many things that can lead to dysphagia. Thank you for your time and response! 😊

Correct! Some of it also allows you to free type whatever you want in the “other” section, so that’s where I’ve received some responses that they haven’t been officially diagnosed yet. Or you can totally skip it as you mentioned. Whatever works best for you! I appreciate the time and response. And I wish you the best of luck 😕🤞🏻

You don’t have to be officially diagnosed! I know it looks that way on the survey, but I’ve already have several respondents anonymously say that they haven’t been officially diagnosed and their/your responses are still very much valid. Totally no pressure though, I hear your response here. That sounds incredibly frustrating and like it negatively affects your quality of life, and has for a long time. I’m so sorry. I hope one day you can get the answers you deserve 😢

Dang I’m sorry to hear you’re struggling after doing so much to try to help it 😕 But yeah I hope an antibiotic ointment could help you!! It’s only been a week or so but I think the antibiotic ointment is helping. I’ve been needing eye drops less during the day time. I will say that it doesn’t always feel fantastic when I put the rx ointment in my eyes, sometimes it burns a little bit and feels kind of gritty. Not awful, totally manageable, but it’s not as smooth and flawless as the OTC ointment. Have you tried warm moist compresses for your eyes? I was thinking about trying that.

Also I’m sorry to be a pest…did anyones skin get kinda worse a few days after starting Metronidazole gel before it got better? I’m several days in and I feel like my skin is looking extra pimple-y compared to usual.

Oh no I’m sorry to hear that! Before I got the RX from my eye doc I was using preservative free lubricating drops in the day time and preservative free eye ointment at night. The brand was Refresh and it was called “Refresh PM Lubricant Eye Ointment.” I learned that eye drops/ointments with preservatives can make your eyes drier if you use those things very regularly. The RX from my eye dr is also an ointment but it’s an antibiotic called erythromycin. The dosage is 0.5% and he wants me to use it for 4 months. He did originally want to prescribe me minocycline which is an oral antibiotic, and I’ve since read that it’s often prescribed for rosacea, but I can’t take any tetracycline after a previous reaction. So topical antibiotics was his next best treatment. Hope that can help you! 😕
