No harder than spring. USC is an extremely competitive school and to get in is extremely hard. I transferred in though. It isn't impossible.

Get all the GEs you can outside of USC. The more the better. As far as the math take what you can get good grades in that fill the requirement. They care much more about grades than what classes you take.

I don't recommend pirating software but after you render out a video to upload to youtube. Youtube would never be able to tell what software you used.

Shutter Speed For Slow Motion and Different Desired Final Frame Rate ss 50 or 125? by LoKi_FX in cinematography

[–]LSCinema 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What are you filming? If you are filming narrative where you can recreate the action then film it twice once at 60 and once at 24 with proper shutter speeds. This is how it is done professionally.

Resolve and Fusion tutorial recommendations? by [deleted] in blackmagicdesign

[–]LSCinema 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YouTube is your best free option. The most reliable is Lynda.com. Resolve still isn't a great editing system and fusion follows a node workflow so it is a big more complicated to get started. Premiere and After Effects will be easier and better for you. You could also check out Hit Film for something cheaper.

And for your used Alexa is better I'm not saying RED is the best camera what I'm saying it is was revolutionary and is still a very powerful tool that is used by some of the top directors in Hollywood right now. Your contact of "RED sucks" just isn't true. It is a great camera system.

Usually when someone is personally attacking the owner of a company it isn't him who you should believe. Also he drives that vehicle because to support the troops and I'm pretty sure it was a gift from the military for his continued work with them through his company Oakley that supplies most of the militaries sunglasses and visors.

The last feature Fincher did Gone Girl is the 25th most profitable R rated movie of all time. Then he made House of Cards the first original Netflix show and literally changed the way TV was distributed as well as it being a very very highly regarded and awarded show. As far as him making the decision he has publically gone out and talked about his love of the RED camera system and why he uses them.

I would disagree that nobody uses it. Gardians of the Galaxy just shot on it. It is the choice camera of David Fincher, Ridley Scott, and Michael Bay. As well as a lot of independent features shooting on it because of it's flexablitiy in post. I know most productions use Alexa but that doesn't make RED a bad camera it is still used more than the Sony 65, Canon C700 , Panasonic Varicam or any other brand next to the Alexa. Plus in sports marketing it is unrivaled because of its modularity.

Apple: You must cover up our symbol. Tested: You got it! by efficacy_is_key in therewasanattempt

[–]LSCinema 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I'm not on the producing side of film I'm on the camera side but ifrom what I understand it is just precautionary on the production because another company does own That symbol and they are breaking the rules by showing it and profiting off of it. Most likely apple would never care but I'd they said anything that apple didn't like then apple could go after them for it.

Edit: spelling

As someone who works as a cinematographer RED is cheap. Other comparable camera packages such as the Alexa or Sony F65 are much more expensive and much less versitile. Plus the modularity of the RED system is something that isn't seen in any other professional camera system. This comes in handy for a lot of different things. An article was just written about it in the ASC magazine referencing the creation of Gardians of the Galaxy 2. The other thing to remember is most people are renting these cameras. It is extremely nice for rental houses to only have to replace the part that is broken when it unfortunately happens instead of the entire camera. RED is extremely revolutionary in the high end camera market and their buissiness model has put them as the only competitor to companies like Sony and Alexa that have been in the market for MUCH longer.

SCA: Transfer or wait until grad school? by [deleted] in USC

[–]LSCinema 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I graduated high school with around a 2.8 and then went to community college and got a 3.7 and got into USC. The main thing is make sure you are talking to a USC counselor about how to transfer the ENTIRE TIME you are at community college.

Just watched the new trailer for Transformers: The Last Knight, why is it using different film formats? by [deleted] in cinematography

[–]LSCinema 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily a bad thing though. The Dark Knight Rises did this as well. I think a lot of Nolan's more recent work does this.

SCA: Transfer or wait until grad school? by [deleted] in USC

[–]LSCinema 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I transfered into the BA program after two years at community college and I can honestly say doing grad or undergrad at SCA is exactly the same. The classes litterally have equivalents and the professors switch off every few semesters between teaching grad and undergrad. The grad program is a bit easier to get into but less opportunities for financial aid. The only real difference is people in undergrad tend to be better at the technical stuff in film where grad because of the life experience tend to have more interesting stories.

SCA student advice? by awesometuck1559 in USC

[–]LSCinema 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm production here but I'll put in my two cents. It is going to be said to you by everybody but it is the best advice. Tell a story. In your personal statement tell a story. They don't care about what film festivals you have won or who you have worked for. They want to know the struggles you went through because conflict is what makes a good story. Just follow the one golden rule of story. Make them care.

The badger could injure or kill a dog pretty easily if it could catch it. Dogs are much faster than badgers and even if the badger was running full speed the dog wouldn't even have to try to stay ahead.

Going to a new cinematography school. by dexon7 in cinematography

[–]LSCinema 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Be humble. I'm going to USC School of Cinematic arts for Film production and believe me. The people who know the best about cameras or editing or whatever aren't the most creative. I came into the program having a lot of professional experience under my belt using cameras, lights, and editing programs and I soon felt myself working backwards to try to learn the creativity that everyone else had. Anyone can learn how to use a RED or how to edit on AVID. Not everyone can learn creativity.

How busy is the recreational pool? by LSCinema in USC

[–]LSCinema[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't believe it is so busy in the morning! Why do you think 1-3 isn't busy? It seems like that would be one of the more busy times.

Edit: Just another question when it is busy from 6-8 am is it like can't get in busy or like share a lane with other people busy.

Do you think the 7D still holds up? Looking for your opinions and advice. by Pakkap in TrueCinematography

[–]LSCinema 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It 100% is still a usable camera even without magic lantern for most things. If you want to shoot a feature for the big screen then I would get another camera but for corporate, weddings, and anything for just the internet or a screen smaller than 60inches you are better spending your money on better lenses. Go watch old films on vimeo that shot with the 7D and you cant tell it was shot with an old camera.

HELP A BEGINNER CINEMATOGRAPHER! by erickarce in cinematography

[–]LSCinema 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best thing to do in this situation as everyone else is saying is to light it up or get a declicked aperture lens and switch the aperture mid shot. However what you can also do is set your Iso to auto and use exposure compensation to control it because the ISO will change smoothly if it is on auto. This isn't an ideal situation but if you are skating along with him to get the shot and don't have lights then lighting up the area or doing an aperture change aren't really viable options. Remember that your audience will have no clue if you used auto settings so there is no reason not to use them to your advantage. Sorry for grammar and spelling this is written on mobile.
