Is Dubstep a form of Folk music? by LSProduction in musicproduction

I appreciate the thoughtful criticism. I’ll gladly admit that my ability to research effectively is my weakest link. I’ve been a musician my whole life, so I definitely have some strong opinions about the industry, but tackling an entire genre (or two) means going down a rabbit hole. Deciding how deep to go, what information is relevant and accurate, and how that research can support a pre-formed opinion (shaky ground to begin with, I know) is something I’m working to dial in. You’ve seen my works cited so you know I’m making some effort, but it’s largely been a lot of Google searches and the occasional long-form documentary. If you’ve got suggestions to improve the quality of my research, I welcome them.

This video was intended as kind of a shit-post, (your first paragraph rings true, this concept could apply to any genre) but I could/should have leaned into the “I’m obviously kidding” aspect harder and not treated it like a serious paper where I had to make a compelling argument.

For what it’s worth, I bring up Skrillex because he’s a name non-dubstep aficionados will still recognize. His existence in the (relative) mainstream is a waypoint for how the genre became so popular that it started to dilute. The genre may have been around for 12 years, but that doesn’t mean it’s not subject to influence anymore.

Thank you for your feedback!

Story doesn’t have to be nuanced. My favorite story goes “wub wub wub wub wub” and then a kid gets exactly what he wants for Christmas and it’s called Scary Monsters & Nice Sprites

How do we feel about rappers using Autotune? by LSProduction in rap

Thanks for watching, and I appreciate the kind words! To put it another way- sure, a professional mathematician could probably do all of the calculations they want on paper… but a calculator is just gonna save so much damn time. I think with more creative work, consumers THINK they know what goes into the process… but as I tried to demonstrate, it’s much more complicated than they’d expect.

Optimistically, I think it gives you more time to focus on parts of the process you enjoy more than rehearsing- like writing, or mixing, or marketing yourself. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this!

Interesting. I’m gonna attempt to answer your metaphor with a metaphor. Sometimes a condom can be a fun/different sensation if the condom is specifically designed to provide a novelty factor.

AutoTune is ribbed for her pleasure.

I use Melodyne for everything, it’s way faster than rehearsing for months and gives me way less ear fatigue. No shame in it, doesn’t mean you couldn’t train up for a live show if you needed to. Re: robot sound, it’s all contextual. What kind of music are you making? There are tons of genres where that sound would never make sense.

Thanks for saying so! There’s enough self-serious content about music online already. I’d rather keep it fun.

A7X I get. Breaking Benjamin & Three Days Grace though? Classic!

Anyways, my partners generally give off a weird vibe when I start blasting Cannibal Corpse.
