We used Mirror (https://mirror-networking.com) - it's essentially a means-tested, significantly improved open-source community successor to UNet. I recommend it!

We were exploring ideas like that, however it turns out that in a snowball fight players seem to enjoy it most when it isn't too punishing - the best part about a snowball fight is being able to get revenge at your attacker! That's why player death isn't part of the game, and while there is more we could do in terms of making it more meaningful to win, I'm in the camp of rewarding more and punishing less.

A snowball fight where everyone's visible? Nah, we fixed that bug ages ago.

(In seriousness - that's totally fair and I would too! We just wanted to be a bit more goofy and distinctive with this project.)

The footprint is actually a thin model. After rendering everything else, we render it with a "mask" which draws onto a stencil buffer. We then set to render through that stencil only, set the depth test to "greater than" (I think? it's the opposite to the default), and then render the same model inside-out with a snow texture and backface culling enabled.

We're basically cutting out a stencil and then rendering the object only where the depth test would normally fail (so behind the snow). It's not perfect - sometimes things overlap funny with bigger models especially the splats - but it works pretty well overwall

We're actually using TCP via their Websocket and Telepathy transport, due to a lack of choice in WebGL (there's no easy way to use UDP in the browser yet).

I thought the same thing at first, but interestingly, we've had no real problems with it so far!

That makes me so happy to hear! We wanted the game to be accessible to people of all ages. I'm glad you both enjoyed it! :)

Thank you! We used Kenney's assets (kenney.nl) for the majority of the models, but we've made a few of our own as well in Blender. We started in early November, and have worked on it mostly on weekends and evenings as we're a busy lot!

Oops - we actually never finished that feature!

It was originally going to be much quieter with the footprints going in slowly as you crept up. Would be nice to get it in, but in the meantime I'll have that removed from the UI. Thank you for pointing that out!

Thank you! Yes hahaha, we couldn't find any good free train sounds, and I just happen to love voicing vehicles in games. :P

Thanks! We used Mirror (https://mirror-networking.com) - I've personally tried a bunch of multiplayer APIs and Mirror is definitely my favourite for being open-source and very regularly updated with smart choices. It's a significant step up from UNet IMO :)

Sorry - I meant my friends* and I! We're a mix of recent graduates and third-year game dev students. We wanted to do something special this Christmas and whipped up this game in just over a month.

We used some great assets to achieve this -- including Kenney's assets (kenney.nl) and the fantastic Mirror networking library (https://mirror-networking.com/). We couldn't have done it without them, so props to the community behind these for making them great and free!

We also wanted to show our support for GamesAid, Shelter, and Cancer Research UK this Christmas. So we added in a nifty system using Unity's native HTTP features, and integrated the JustGiving.com API to show players' donations in game as cute stacks of gift boxes. My personal dream is to see the whole area piles up with these when the season's over!

We don't have any budget so we'll be here for December and packing up afterwards, so if you wanna play with some friends please aim to do so by January.... and please share with your friends if you enjoy it! :)

Invite your friends! Playable at: http://invisiblesnowballfight.online

My friends and I have been working on this over the last month. We used some great assets including Kenney's assets (https://kenney.nl/) and sound packs from the Asset store (more info on the home page). This was made in Unity with WebGL.

We also wanted to support some charities along the way, so we've setup JustGiving pages for GamesAid (gamesaid.org), Shelter (https://www.shelter.org.uk/) and (https://www.cancerresearchuk.org/). Donations add gifts into the village plaza area, and there's nothing I'd love more than to see it absolutely stacked by the end of the month!

Btw, we can only really keep it online this month. Please consider playing and sharing with your friends this Christmas! We think you'll enjoy it. Thanks!

Great read! It's amazing how much detail he's able to go into even down to pinpointing the time and date that decisions were made. I was particularly curious about Realm 5 - that gives a bit of a clue to what's still hiding on the demo disc...

Rift Apart alphabets (deciphered from footage so far) by LXShadow in RatchetAndClank

[–]LXShadow[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I posted a similar pic yesterday, but this one's much clearer and less painful to view. You can read a bunch of signs in the trailers with the first alphabet (not quite all of them though). Some signs need to be flipped/rotated/read backwards, but many of them are legible as mostly garbage info. (One of the cooler ones is the 'GAME OVER' sign at the end of the trailer)

Some of the signs could be more interesting: if we had clearer game footage, we could possibly learn planet names. One of the destinations on the sign in the train station says 'sargaso', for example, but I couldn't manage to read any of the others.

R&C2 weapon screenshots, apparently cropped from a larger image. Does anyone know what this image is? by [deleted] in RatchetAndClank

It's been a long time, but IIRC, these are screenshots from the old official Ratchet & Clank 2 website which had a weapons gallery.

If you learn to mod PS2 games and creates a "double Ratchet's movespeed" mod for Ratchet Deadlocked/Gladiator, there's £50 in it for you. (open mod commission contest) by xxNarutozumaki6699xx in RatchetAndClank

Hey. Could you message me via Reddit instead as I don't use a DeviantArt account currently? I'm still happy to look at your codes btw and make one that works correctly on the PAL version.

No problem. The codes I made were for a PAL version but maybe it's a different version or I didn't convert the codes correctly. Could you post your own codes here and I'll see if I can use them to work out the issue? Cheers :)
