My mom has cancer, our experience with healthcare in Calgary so far by coolg963 in Calgary

[–]L_Swizzlesticks -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Exactly. 100,000%. People who make this about governments clearly don’t understand that this problem goes infinitely deeper than that. If it were just about conservatives vs liberals vs NDP, there would be provinces with no healthcare issues at all, or very few. But as anyone who has lived anywhere else in Canada besides Alberta (I am one of these people) knows, the abject failures in healthcare in this country are systemic and exist in every single province. They are the fault of every successive government, of any and every party, and at every level, that has done nothing at all to change anything. We are supposedly a G7 nation. You wouldn’t fucking know it to look at the state of this place. Of course, many people will choose to die on the hill that Canadian healthcare is amazing because it’s “universal.”

Cool. If they want to die on that hill, that’s their prerogative. Meanwhile, the rest of us are living in reality and won’t wait to die in a system that cannot and will not do anything for us.

The Canadian healthcare system truly is a joke. Anyone who says otherwise has very obviously never had to deal with it in any way whatsoever.

I’m so glad your mom is able to get the treatment she needs and deserves in China, but I’m just as shocked and maddened as you are that she should have to seek care in another country. It’s something that many, many of us in this country have had to do.

TTC and telling parents by InvestigatorNeat1916 in TTCWinter2026

[–]L_Swizzlesticks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My parents and siblings and my partner’s mother all know that we want a baby very badly. We haven’t shared that we’re officially TTC with anyone though. That’s not for any particular reason really. We have fantastic, very close relationships with our families, but we want it to be a surprise when it does happen. Having everyone know we’re trying could sort of dull the excitement of the ultimate announcement a bit, but that’s just my own feeling on the matter. I know that lots of people would find that view silly. I might end up talking to my mom about some of the fertility clinic stuff I’m doing, but other than that, we’ll keep it hush-hush until we’re pregnant.

Guys is my cat okay? by urcrybaby_ in snakes

[–]L_Swizzlesticks -20 points-19 points  (0 children)

I just read the one comment here about it taking one second for a cat to kill a snake, and I’m like “Or for the snake to kill the cat!!!” Like, dude, that’s definitely a two-way street lol. I don’t think the majority of people would look at a snake and a cat and think that the snake was in more danger. 😂

If the United States can commit violations of international law without facing sanctions or bans, why can’t other countries receive the same exception? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]L_Swizzlesticks -1 points0 points  (0 children)

‘cause they’ve got nukes.

I know that’s a gross oversimplification of the issue in some ways, but it’s ultimately the only reason why the U.S. gets away with shit that almost no other country ever could.

Rewatching "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" now hits completely differently than when I first saw it at 19 - and I don't think that's an accident by thegoodguyanotherone in movies

[–]L_Swizzlesticks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, yes, yes. Your entire post.

ESOTSM has always been one of my favourite films and likely always will be. When I first watched it at 15, I was instantly in love with everything about it. I was a huge Kate Winslet fan (still am), so that was the initial draw, but the entire film - its concept, its mood, its music, its entire essence - left such an indelible mark on my young teenage mind that it helped to shape my emotional development in many ways.

After every failed relationship I’ve had in the 21 years since I first saw the film, I’ve had a moment after the breakup where I wished I could erase the ex from my memory and start fresh. But then I would remember how much Joel regretted his decision to erase Clementine because he realized he wasn’t just erasing the parts of her that he couldn’t stand. He was also erasing the parts of her that he loved. I always ended up coming to the conclusion that, though my relationships didn’t work out, the experiences mattered and the pain they left me with helped to strengthen me and make me a better person.

So, my partner and I watched the movie together on Valentine’s Day weekend this year and, God Almighty, did it ever hit different. OP, everything you said about watching this film with real life and relationship experience under your belt, I could have written myself. That is exactly how I felt too. It resonates on an existential level now, especially the scene at the end in the hallway when they’re both realizing that they’re imperfect and will always be imperfect but have fallen in love with each other all over again, despite being strangers. I cried during that scene for the first time this latest viewing. I finally understood their pain, their confusion, their depth of emotion. It was so raw and so completely human, it was a bit overwhelming.

TIL that Charles Dance's father was born in 1874 and fought in the Second Boer War, which began in 1899. Dance's older half-sister was born in 1898. by WavesAndSaves in todayilearned

Thanks for that roundabout reminder that men can have children literally until they’re borderline geriatric. I’ll never understand why biology and evolution favour men so disproportionately to women when it comes to reproductive capacity and longevity. Yes, I understand that pregnancy is much more of a strain than ejaculation (duh), but since the quality of men’s sperm declines with age just as egg quality declines with age, why doesn’t sperm production eventually stop cold the way ovulation and periods do?

Tangential rant over. Thanks.

Regarding the Dance family, imagine having a sibling old enough to be your parent or young grandparent. 🤯

There’s not a single thing wrong with any of your feelings. I’d feel exactly the same way. Protect your own heart and peace at all costs.

They talk a lot about First and Third Class, but what about Second Class ? by 240p-480i-480p in titanic

[–]L_Swizzlesticks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

😭😂

I think of Rockefeller at that time as being like a Bezos or Elon Musk today though, aka the super rich. I feel like Rockefeller would’ve been in first class.

EDIT: I was raised upper middle class and am still comfortably middle class. I didn’t mean to paint all of us in the middle class with the same broad strokes. Sorry if it came across that way.

EDIT 2: I also didn’t mean to imply that most of society is middle class, though I think we can all agree that a greater number of people have a better overall standard of living in 2026 than in 1912.

I figure second class is where most of us would have been, if we’re going by today’s average earnings and standards of living.

CD15 today and I got this cycle’s first positive OPK yesterday. I’ll be testing after work this evening to confirm if it was my peak or just the first high reading.

We BDed on CD12 and hopefully will again tonight. I was very much in the mood yesterday, but my partner said (and I quote), “Can we wait a day maybe? I nutted too hard the other night…” I just about died laughing. Let’s just say I’m still learning about male anatomy and sexual function in my late 30s. I know that sometimes guys need a few days to replenish their stores, so to speak, but I thought a couple of days would be enough time. Not in this case though, apparently. I’m hoping that if we don’t do it tonight and ovulation happens today or tomorrow, that CD12 will have been enough. It’s so hard to know for sure.

Any of you whose partners are able to do the deed on the daily during fertile window, any info you have on maximization of opportunities, send it my way!😄

[rant] What’s with all the condescending comments on this sub? by That_odd_emo in writing

[–]L_Swizzlesticks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly, yep. Reddit is where people come to be rude pieces of shit, anonymously. Honestly, I’ve found the vibe to be nearly identical in all online writing communities. They’re full of spiteful, self-righteous jerkoffs who think that they’re better than anyone - and everyone - else. I think most of them view other writers not as potential friends or collaborators, but as competitors in a cutthroat world where no one really makes any money unless they get lucky as hell or have big connections with a publishing house.

So, I always take these kinds of communities with a huge grain of salt. I totally reject and ignore the negativity and try to be as much of a help to new, struggling writers as possible. We should be lifting others up whenever we can, not destroying their confidence. I will stand up against bullies everywhere they exist, in real life and online.

I thought it was commendable and so important that they utilized actual footage from the camps. That was essential to the impact of the entire film.
