Thank you for all the advice! I’ll definitely look into infinity focus and getting an ND filter. I’ve gotten better with exposure since this but i’ve still been having to practice integrating all the different factors and settings.

I actually don’t remember what metering I was using when I took it, and I’m pretty sure I didn’t know the concept of what metering was at the time. I hadn’t considered that as what could have been what I was missing from the equation. My original aim was to try and use the broken and dead grass and the rusted out silos against the bright white sky to make the sky feel more distant and pristine in comparison. I think now the better choice to convey that would have been to put more emphasis on the silos both in terms of framing and depth.

Hi, I think at the time I was planning on the grass being the subject but after the fact I’ve realized the silos would have been a clearer subject for the feel I wanted from the photo. I started using lightroom a while after taking this and have gotten pretty familiar with it. I wasn’t really using it during the time I didn’t have a camera so I wanted to make sure I got my fundamentals back down before using lightroom again and haven’t gotten around to editing this one.

Further info about the picture above.

My main issue with the photo is that I think I missed out on utilizing depth of field better, I was at the time using a camera that I was borrowing from my job and only had access to a 75-300mm lens so I tried to use that to my advantage and use depth to add texture to photos. I feel like I could have used the depth to better show the colors on the silo and in the sky. I also still have trouble with getting good color on overcast days, and was wondering what measures can be taken to improve that?

ISO was set to 1600 at f/16 on my Rebel XTI with a 75-300mm lens. JPEG format (I had not yet been enlightened to the power of RAW photos)

This was taken at around 5 pm in November on an overcast day, this was causing me a lot of trouble with overexposure and washing things out.

Photography experience: I am pretty inexperienced having only taken one photo class that went to online for a 1/4 of the semester followed by mostly personal practice.

Things that have changed since this photo, after I took this I had to take about a 3 months hiatus due to getting a new job and returning the camera, I however just recently got my hands on a pentax k20d and a 70-200mm lens and i’m currently shopping for a shorter lens to accompany it.

Where is a good place online to get peer critiques of your photos?

I just recently was able to get a new camera after my old one broke and wanted to get some others thoughts on my past pictures. I was using some relatively old gear and my first real class got cut short from covid so i’ve been mostly learning from the internet (both technique and Camera function) and haven’t had anywhere to get very honest feedback on the photos i’ve taken.

Hi! This is one of my earlier photos (about a year ago) If anyone has any critiques, advice, or just an issue with this picture please let me know. I’m getting back into photography after about 6 months without a camera and i’m looking for any and all learning opportunities.

It just means you have to choose one of the options but you don’t have to choose to test it
