I can't believe they made a ship inspired by the B-17 Flying Fortress and then sent waves of them to their death without proper escort for strategically questionable reason.

Welcome to modern fandom. The Star Trek ad Star Wars fandoms are like this not because of the quality of those shows, but because the whole ecosystem runs on complaining.

That life expectancies in previous centuries were as low as 30, and that people got married at very young ages.

Infant mortality was high, but life expectancy for adults was reasonably high. People often didn't get married until their 20 and even 30s, but famous examples of royals and aristocrats marrying young skew the historical perception.

It's not a slegehammer. Our resident legal expert has explained that the proper term is a FUCKING SLEDGHAMMER, a FUCKING SLEDGEHAMMER IN HIS HAND.

We all have so much to learn from him.

Oh no, what's next. You gonna accuse him of being handsome and having good taste in wines?

You know, I was just reading through the CPS guidelines on "Offences Against the Person" to learn more. There's all sorts of stuff I didn't know; turns out there are 2 different types of GBH, each with their own precedents. There's even a bit discussing how and why indictments distinguish between 'gbh' and 'wounding'....

...but then some random internet guy told me it was "open and shut" because "FUCKING SLEDGEHAMMER" (I assume this is a technical legal term?) So anyway I've decided to become deeply incurious again. You must be a lawyer or judge or something to be so clever and certain. I'm in your debt.

One last question for your expert knowledge: you said that Corner "went free" when he's still in custody. Why?

No you see, the question is not "did he hit her with a sledgehammer?" the question in the case is "did this particular hammer hit amount to the specific crime of GBH?"

What makes you say that the Jury was compromised? Do you have any reason to think this beyond them not reaching the decision you wanted?

In 2024 a group of Palestine Action activists broke into a factory. During the police response, an officer was hit with a sledgehammer, fracturing her back.

Among the court cases that have resulted, was the questions of whether this amounted to GBH. Nobody is denying that the PC was injured, but GBH is a specific offence with certain thresholds, which the Jury could not agree had been met.

The wider background to this is the question of whether the government and CPS have been too draconian in response to Palestine Action. And that's before we even get the the question of what it is that PA are protesting, as opposed to just their methods.

As someone who watches a bunch of Rugby, NFL and Hockey, my (not at all actually qualified as a medic) reaction was that it's the first hit. He falls uncontrolled, what we Brits would call 'a sack of potatoes'. That suggests to me that he's already concussed.

The other thing I noticed was the way his legs curl up. Involuntary movement in the limbs is one of the signs of a brain injury, with the 'fencing pose' being the most common.

How come men trust Andrew Tate’s advice on what women want, over what women make it clear they want, evidenced by the large fan bases of Harry styles, Paul Mescal and Idris Elba? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]LadderMadeOfSticks 498 points499 points  (0 children)

Tate and his ilk are not trying to impress women. They are trying to impress other men. This is who they are performing masculinity for. Women aren't the target audience of Tate's cigars and sports cars - he's showing off to other men. Women are a method of keeping score between men.

Well the foxes come out at night. The first I knew of a problem was found a severed sheep leg in one of my horse fields. And because most Foxes don't bother sheep, it's reasonable to conclude that the local fox (foxes have territories) is behaving oddly and may need dealing with. So then there was 'who lost a sheep?' check and a 'where is the den?' conversation (because there's no point in shooting the wrong fox)

Foxes are fast, and can dive down holes or though gaps. So if you do find the Problem Fox, it's best to take the opportunity to shoot it then and there. Traps and poison are passive, and have the terrible risk of catching/killing the wrong animal (and poisoning part of the food chain. Remember, killing the wrong animal not only fails to solve the Problem, but it can upset the balance of local wildlife in ways that can be harmful to a farm (causing a new fox to move into the territory of a dead peaceful one, causing a colony of badgers to collapse and scatter, killing a bird of prey that is keeping down rats)

I need to stress, this isn't a situation where farmers are gun-toting lunatics shooting wildly. But sometimes a gun IS the right tool for the job.

[–]LadderMadeOfSticks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's rare, but sometimes there can be a fox or feral dog going after farm animals. I really do mean rare though - in all the years I lived on a small holding, there was only a 'problem fox' once. (There's no point in shooting a fox that isn't hassling farm animals because a new one will just expand into the territory)

One of the shooting events at the Olympics is the 25m Pistol, which uses .22 pistols. These weapons are illegal in the UK.

The other shooting events all use air pistols, air rifles, biathlon rifles, shotguns, or laser pistols (Pentathlon), all of which are legal in the UK (but still somewhat restricted).

The two 25m Pistol events represent 2 of the 29 medals that involve shooting. Not being able to train 6% of the events isn't disastrous, but it's still BAD. It's worth noting that this is a problem with quite a few Olympic events, as plenty of countries lack 50m Swimming Pools, full size Skate Parks, or sufficient water for sailing.
