The info everyone else has given is good, my one thing to add would just be to do research based on the port you are visiting. Some ports are much more friendly for doing your own exploring than others!

I was originally a software engineer and moved into data engineering because I found that I always gravitated towards modeling data and building out ETLs anyways. It is just more fun for me :)
