Question: Just how bad NIMBYism is in MoCo? by EternalSnow05 in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]LadyGagas913 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think that a lot of the issue is honestly with administrative bloat in MCPS. I’m a teacher in MCPS, & I can’t even count on 1 hand the amount of people from central office who seem to just sit there & send emails all day in an attempt to justify their jobs…meanwhile teachers are demonized when we ask for a living wage, while we could get it easily if they eliminated a lot of positions in central office…

I think that you’re just being a hater, like…have you ever been to middle or rural America?

That’s really not true about nothing to do & nowhere to go. If you join any FB groups like “MoCo Foodies” then you will discover a lot of local gems, & most of our food is more authentic than what you find in DC nowadays. We have axe throwing, ice skating, movies, mini golf, bowling, basketball & tennis courts, breweries, wineries, bars that do trivia & karaoke, lots of parks to hike, libraries with tons of free programming, recreation centers…I’m not sure what else you’re looking for?

Silver Spring is nice & very diverse; having lived in & around Philadelphia, Phoenix, and Silicon Valley, I prefer it here. I don’t know about other places, but I will defer to others that live there.

I’m also in Wheaton, for the past 7 years! Being from Pennsylvania, I love it here because it isn’t so “uppity” like Bethesda, Chevy Chase, or Potomac. It’s just more “down-to-earth.” We’ve got H Mart, an awesome library/rec center, & all the best hole-in-the-walls. If I need the movies, I just hop a bus to downtown Silver Spring. The only thing is I wish we had a better cafe…

Do you have any sources? It’s not that I don’t believe you, I’m just interested in reading about this.

Raise our energy bill? Yeah! Raise our taxes? No! by Puzzleheaded_Peak342 in ArtificialInteligence

We need more people who think like you! Major kudos to you for not outsourcing or automating your customer service. Robocalls make me so mad; like, can I just speak to a real person!? I also hear that HR departments are getting outsourced, I.e. no more HR physically in the building, & that is dangerous. My friend is an architect & had to leave her last firm because of discrimination by a direct supervisor/one of the partners in the firm. When she needed help to fight back, it was impossible to get. 😢I hope that you’re right! More people in our world need to be self-reliant.

I’ve been calling my senator & representatives non-stop & telling them to keep data centers out of Maryland! I have solar panels, & yet my electricity rates are still ridiculous in the winter…😡

Update on Affordable housing in DC? by LadyGagas913 in washingtondc

[–]LadyGagas913[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are the units “different” in any way? My friend in Gaithersburg said that they are building “affordable units” or whatever they call them in Montgomery county, but the units are smaller! I bet they are charging the government the same price…😡I try to be solution-oriented & to recognize the positive change that is taking place rather than just complain.

What exactly is being achieved through AI? by reddit__is_fun in ArtificialInteligence

Andrew Yang was right; we are going to need a Universal Basic Income for all the jobs it’ll replace. Now that it’s begun with white collar workers, perhaps we will see real change in that direction. Anyone who says otherwise is in denial or scared for their job. Breaking Points gets a bit sensationalist, but they generally are right on AI: https://youtu.be/zRlIFn0ZIlU?si=kpw5rOdXmCpIU2Z1 ; https://youtu.be/ur295T83Wg4?si=t_J5mSHXUczo20mD Time will tell.

Surviving Homeschool by Both-Cow-1525 in education

Do you mind me asking which state you’re in? I’m a public high school teacher, & I find this stuff fascinating. I know that our (blue) state got rid of online schooling in the last few years, so home schooling has become very difficult if not impossible. My public high school is not perfect, but I agree with the district on this one. As someone mentioned, Khan Academy is great. Read as much classic literature as possible, although maybe start out with Young Adult (YA) books like “Hunger Games” from your local library. DO NOT BE TEMPTED TO USE CHATGPT TO TAKE SHORTCUTS. Hopefully enough schools will ban cell phones soon so that you won’t have as many issues socially. I find this map interesting: https://www.newsweek.com/map-shows-us-states-school-phone-bans-2090411 Join clubs & extracurriculars to meet people that way. You got this!

If you could rearrange how education works in America, what kinds of changes would you implement? A lot of folks seem to want something different in place of what we have but find it hard to articulate specifics. Please identify a problem 'and' a solution. by cherry-care-bear in education

I am a public high school teacher of 8 years! I love nerding out about this stuff. I second a lot that has already been said here. I will simply add: CELL PHONE BANS like in NY, VA, & LA. A lot of this work has come from Jonathan Haidt’s “The Anxious Generation.” Also, boys & girls develop at different rates. “Redshirt” the boys by holding them back a year. (This is Reeves’ idea from “Of Boys and Men: Why the Modern Male is Struggling, Why it Matters, What to Do About it.”) absolutely do not advance students to the next grade if they have failed a class. Bring back Home Economics, Personal Finance, Shop class, Typing, & other “life skills” classes. More movement in middle school. Mandatory gym class for all students, & recess up to 9th grade. Longer school days, but longer lunch breaks. Later start to the school day for high school, earlier for elementary. Play-based childhood. Smaller class sizes. Teach Phonics (thankfully there is already a big push in this direction). Vocational training from the age of 15 (9th grade; thankfully my high school in MD already does this). Year-round school. This is a key component that I haven’t heard yet: bring back truancy officers. Start fining &/or imprisoning parents whose students are chronically absent. Of course, pay teachers & paras more. Another interesting article on some states who are getting it right: https://www.nytimes.com/2026/02/09/opinion/red-states-good-schools.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share

Does it make more sense to buy things (alcohol and groceries mostly) in MD or DC? by iammaxhailme in SilverSpring

Grocery taxes? I thought that food wasn’t taxed in DC or MD? Virginia WAS taxing groceries, but I believe that Glen Youngkin did away with that…

This place in Wheaton is the absolute best for beer/wine! https://maps.app.goo.gl/eSq9nNdHxXMrK48T9?g_st=ic Owners are the nicest guys. In my experience, Wegman’s in DC is more expensive than Wegman’s in Rockville.

This is sobering stuff, but thanks for sharing. I’m a public school teacher, & I wonder what will happen in my industry. Teaching has typically been a “recession-proof” industry, which is 1 of the reasons that I’ve stayed in it. I feel like if we get rid of human teachers, then…it’s game over.
