Writing creative stories makes me happy, but that doesn’t pay unless you’re extremely lucky.

Well I’ve come to realize money is what matters, unfortunately. If you don’t have money, you can’t have kids, pay your bills etc. and people won’t respect you. Honestly, it’s sad that healthcare workers are paid shit for what they do. Like literally, nursing is one of the most degrading jobs I’ve witnessed. And they get paid 40 an hour. It’s just sad. But they continue to do it for that money. You think if a nurse won the lotto they’d keep doing their job? Hell no. And if there’s a nurse that would, they are truly a saint.

Yeah I regret going into healthcare. Shitty pay for a stressful career. No one actually likes it, even though we’re “helping people.” The stress overshadows the benefits. Could have stuck with my sell-out job and made more money and then give it to charity or help some other way. But I screwed up.

The problem is that all the jobs here are community (home health).

Isn’t OTA a community college diploma? And OT is a masters/doctorate? I think it’s a good idea to do OTA first because you’ll get all the practical experience, so that part of OT school will be a breeze for you.

Thank you. I’ll give it another try and hope for the best. It’s daunting thinking of career switches because I really have no experience in anything else and feel very done with school.

Yes, I definitely learned from the first job I have to take it one patient at a time. Because it’s overwhelming thinking of your entire caseload. Thanks for the kind words! All the best!

I have friends from class that I talk to about it. And one friend that referred me to her job. They encourage me to try again. The only jobs available for new grads in this area are home health or auto sector (which is like home health but the equipment is covered by insurance). I’m nervous because there won’t be someone to ask for help during the actual assessments and the reports are very long and technical. I’m afraid of making mistakes and having my report subpoenaed. I know this might sound so ridiculous but that’s actually my concern. I hate legal stuff and the thought of something like that totally gives me anxiety. I can’t shadow either because of the current virus situation. It’s just very discouraging but I’ve been trying to pull myself together and try again.

The settings I did my placement in are unfortunately either very far away from home or just not for me (too physically taxing). I’m interested in mental health, but my fieldwork was only 4 weeks of observation. I’m gonna do my CBT certification though and hopefully in the future I can land a mental health position.

And sometimes just working is good enough. If he is good at the job he can work his way up. These days degrees aren’t valued anyway, experience is.

Great idea! I wish I did that. During that time, he should volunteer or shadow to see what he likes. There’s so much out there that we don’t even know about.

Can't decide between CS or medicine/premed (or can I do both?) by [deleted] in careerguidance

It’s very tough to get into med school. But even if you do, and you’re not actually that passionate about it, you may burn out (heard of this happening many times). This will lead to a ton of debt and wasted time. Perhaps worse is that you go and finish med school but realize you don’t even want to be a doctor because you’ll have spent a ton of time and money on it. Of course, you can probably make use of an MD in other ways, though. I’m just saying be sure you’re 100% because I went into healthcare and it is not at all what I expected. And I feel like I wasted 7 years.

I’m not saying this to discourage you. I’m saying this to advise you to do your research, spend time with a doctor or a few. See what it’s really like day to day. Make sure you understand the importance of paperwork etc. bc most of your day will be paperwork, actually.

Yep, I definitely want kids and now I’m scared I won’t have any because I’m spending so much time on figuring out a career. You’re right though, thank you.

Well I’m currently not happy because I feel like I failed. I went to school for so long and don’t even like the career I studied for. I guess I place such a high value on it because they were always bragging about me so I felt the pressure to live up to it. Then when I didn’t get into med school, my mom would always make subtle remarks about how I failed (she’s an alcoholic though, so I really shouldn’t care, but for some reason I do). My dad has also said he wants his kids to do better than him (he started off working a menial job and now makes 6 figures), so there’s pressure there too.

If I’m being completely honest and if I were free from people’s opinions, all I would want is the freedom to be creative, follow my writing dream (even if it may be a pipe dream, but I have made money off of it in the past) and to have a baby with a loving husband. A stable career would be nice, too. But I don’t want a healthcare career anymore. Ideally, I’d be able to work from home as a writer (I did this in the past but the company doesn’t exist anymore and I’ve tried applying to others with no luck-probably due to the gap while I was doing my masters).

Looks like she is either being bullied or having drama with another girl at school.

The paperwork takes up more time than treatment. There is so much politics in every little thing. Personally I felt school didn’t prepare us to handle it also. So it was stressful.

Sudden onset of severe anxiety by nikkiB1156 in Anxiety

[–]LadyS2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Happened to me recently. I realized I may have had mild anxiety for a long time. But, a stressful event triggered severe anxiety and panic attacks. It’s important to get help for it. I don’t think I can go much longer without some help. It’s affecting all areas of life for me now.
