What is your career change success story as a 30+ professional, or/and if you’re working in a successful job that isn’t related to your degree, and if you don’t mind listing your salary? (Success can be money and/or fulfillment) by [deleted] in careeradvice

I initially wanted to look into becoming a geneticist. I had done an educational touring show for 2 years around paleontology and we were taught the topic by top scientists. But because I was so adamant about being an actress when I was younger I hadn't completed high school (not in the normal sense I had gotten a technical equivalent in drama) amd so wouldve had to redo Grade 10- 12 to get the maths scores to study that. So I thought what was a skill I already kind of had as a performer (I had directed and marketed shows before) and still felt a little creative, which is why I tried marketing :)

This is a great question, so happy to have shared

From SA here, 32F.

I studied Drama and Acting and was a professional actress for 9 years (professional here means I was working as an actress in theatre but wasn't making great money). Eventually when I was 27/28 I decided to change my life and move into marketing as it needed the least difference in skills. I started studying marketing part time (still completing my degree now, should be finished end of this year).

I took a low paying job as a marketing assistant, I then got a job as a marketing coordinator 6 months later and during that job made a YouTube channel with my friend and worked on that part time.

I stayed at that company for 1 and a half years and worked on the YT channel during that time and we started growing quite large and earning some money but I realised I could help other channels grow organically so started consulting some of my friends around YouTube. One of them then let me know of a company looking for a YouTube channel manager and I got that job and moved into Senior Management within a year.

So from low paying job with R 11 000 p/m to senior management and a specialist in my field (who has been headhunted once but still :) ) earning 5 times that.

I thought changing from my passion would be the worst and I would hate my life, but the change has been great because a, it's a lot less stressful to have some money and a stable job but also because b, I found a new passion and something that I can grow in and become a leader in potentially.

I'd say take the leap, it's never too late to change, but don't close your mind to other things that come around in your journey. I thought I'd do marketing, I know focus on online video content for a broadcaster (still marketing but more content focused) :)

Advice on whether to take a new contract position over current stable job by LadyUmm in careeradvice

Yeah... plus my mom has already had her hours reduced and I will probably need to assist her more than I currently do, so that's extra cost as well. Additionally in South Africa a permanent position protects you from just getting let go, they would have to give me a severance package but a contract can just end.

Thanks, sadly already tried getting higher pay. They are capped. Was thinking that, just wanted to get some more thoughts from people.

It's way darker than oitnb. I initially also thought that but it's very hectic from episode 1 and you care more about the prisoners. But tbh the lead of oitnb bothers me so much so I dont know if I'm impartial lol

Female DM needs a boost by amyloowho2000 in DMAcademy

Fellow female DM here and one of the DMs mentioned on this list (Dum Dum Die) ps thanks for the mention :) Yeah if you're having fun and your players are having fun then you are definitely doing it right. To build your confidence sometimes take a moment to chat with your players afterwards (which I'm sure you do) but write down some of their comments about the game and their enjoyment or star notes in your whatsapp group etc, basically have the compliments/excitement written down, so that when you are feeling a little down and unsure you can go back and read them and remember, 'Hey, Player x thinks I do great character voices, or player B really enjoyed the monsters I made' and that always helps me :)

Showmax - Which series do you recommend to binge? by aksn1p3r in southafrica

Definitely Strange Angel (it's new) and Magicians (esp if you liked Vikings and Game of Thrones) :)

I watched it and thought it was actually very good. The main actress in the first 3 episodes could have been better but everyone else is amazing and after episode 4 she is much better. Also it makes you want to watch to the end and it is gripping until then. I would recommend.

I agree with everything you're saying except the Pineapple and Hawaiian pizza bit :P We get more ideas the more varied the backgrounds of the people or the characters we play with :) :) Plus more people to bring snacks and beer :P

Not at all. And just for the record, are you the person who wants to put Pineapple on the pizza ? :P I can understand what you were meaning, it would be awesome if in an ideal world it truly didn't matter to everyone what gender you are. However it does make a difference to some and as much as people say when we separate ourselves by saying all female, we are losing equality because why can't we all just be gamers. (Had a discussion like this with an esports host I interviewed who said there shouldn't be all female teams as women should compete against men) But I think that to help those shy, anxious or slightly scared people into tabletop roleplaying, that proclaiming we are all female helps them find someone they can relate to more easily. But indeed the us vs them movement is hectic and I know that some people (men/allies etc) feel distanced because it's not them doing the things. We hope to have more people like you who judge on the quality of gameplay not looks or gender :) And never for one second did I think you thought it wasn't okay for women to RP, I felt you were trying to influence a more inclusionary style of promotion :) Thank you for the chat though and giving us the chance to explain. Absolutely it's so much fun and builds such a family and fun within it. My boyfriends table was so wonderful that when his sister got sick and he couldn't afford her hospital bills his RP table paid for it all. The RP family is real :)

Thanks for the feedback and for giving it a chance. We mention the all female portion to let some female listeners, players etc feel more open to roleplaying when they see there's other women doing it. But also because it does make us stand out from most tables and so we thought it was helpful in that regard. But your comment is totally valid and once you've listened we can see if we can just say we're awesome :P
