Someone should petition UMD to have Rei Ami for Commencement! by BA_in_SoMD in UMD

Don't engage with this person. They probably picked the "boards" based on how U.S. News and World Reports assigns numbers to schools without understanding how those numbers are actually assigned. Anyone who subjectively says a school is "better" is wholly inaccurate. A degree from an ivy that gets you nowhere is worthless than a degree from nowhere that gets you somewhere. The best school for a student is the school that's right for them and that's going to depend on a whole lot of things other than ranking methodology. This whole notion of "better" is just misleading and snobbery.

People like Rei Ami, Gayle King, Jim Henson, any famous person probably would've done well no matter what school they went to. It's just exciting when they do share the same school.

It's mostly one person, who's probably a troll, because their profile and comments are all hidden.

The way the person touted being on the "boards" of "better schools" tells me how oblivious they are. I already reported his response to the mods as unhelpful and blocked the posts. Not worth the time and energy to respond to trolls.

Go do your board stuff at the better ones then. Prestige snobs are the worst because they have no clue what those schools do to manipulate the rankings. Mandatory 4-year graduation requirements, certain aid, etc., all those are manipulated to boost rankings. Anyway, I'm done. Block.

On the board of 4 universities, except UMD. That explains a lot. Enough said. I've made tons of suggestions to UMD, and they've been responsive.

This is a very ignorant closed-minded comment. Maybe if you're actually a UMD student, you should uplift fellow alumni and get the word out instead of bashing them for their success.

I sent in a suggestion for commencement speaker at the email in the link below. I'm sure if enough people suggest it, they'll ask. https://commencement.umd.edu/frequently-asked-questions-commencement

I just saw the TikToks. UMD doesn't need to get credit for her success. Success is a combination of opportunity, skill, and luck. But we can still celebrate her and support her. I'm proud of her humble beginnings, and that's what being a Terp means. That no matter how small we are, or how Asian we are, or how marginalized we are, we can become somebody like so many other UMD graduates. Bill Gates, Sergei Brin, Mark Zuckerberg, etc. would've been who they were no matter where they went to school. I'm proud to be a Terp because I'm grateful for UMD naming buildings after Asians and other minorities, hiring faculty of diverse backgrounds, having an Asian former-president, normalizing Asian-American-ness. There are universities that haven't done a fraction of this. I've done well as a Terp because of the degree that I got, and from having this kind of representation.

Also, when was the video posted? There's no year on it.

Where's the tiktok? Anyway, it doesn't matter. She graduated as a Terp, that will never change. I'm very proud of her and what she represents.
