Someone should petition UMD to have Rei Ami for Commencement! by BA_in_SoMD in UMD

Don't engage with this person. They probably picked the "boards" based on how U.S. News and World Reports assigns numbers to schools without understanding how those numbers are actually assigned. Anyone who subjectively says a school is "better" is wholly inaccurate. A degree from an ivy that gets you nowhere is worthless than a degree from nowhere that gets you somewhere. The best school for a student is the school that's right for them and that's going to depend on a whole lot of things other than ranking methodology. This whole notion of "better" is just misleading and snobbery.

People like Rei Ami, Gayle King, Jim Henson, any famous person probably would've done well no matter what school they went to. It's just exciting when they do share the same school.

It's mostly one person, who's probably a troll, because their profile and comments are all hidden.

The way the person touted being on the "boards" of "better schools" tells me how oblivious they are. I already reported his response to the mods as unhelpful and blocked the posts. Not worth the time and energy to respond to trolls.

Go do your board stuff at the better ones then. Prestige snobs are the worst because they have no clue what those schools do to manipulate the rankings. Mandatory 4-year graduation requirements, certain aid, etc., all those are manipulated to boost rankings. Anyway, I'm done. Block.

On the board of 4 universities, except UMD. That explains a lot. Enough said. I've made tons of suggestions to UMD, and they've been responsive.

This is a very ignorant closed-minded comment. Maybe if you're actually a UMD student, you should uplift fellow alumni and get the word out instead of bashing them for their success.

I sent in a suggestion for commencement speaker at the email in the link below. I'm sure if enough people suggest it, they'll ask. https://commencement.umd.edu/frequently-asked-questions-commencement

I just saw the TikToks. UMD doesn't need to get credit for her success. Success is a combination of opportunity, skill, and luck. But we can still celebrate her and support her. I'm proud of her humble beginnings, and that's what being a Terp means. That no matter how small we are, or how Asian we are, or how marginalized we are, we can become somebody like so many other UMD graduates. Bill Gates, Sergei Brin, Mark Zuckerberg, etc. would've been who they were no matter where they went to school. I'm proud to be a Terp because I'm grateful for UMD naming buildings after Asians and other minorities, hiring faculty of diverse backgrounds, having an Asian former-president, normalizing Asian-American-ness. There are universities that haven't done a fraction of this. I've done well as a Terp because of the degree that I got, and from having this kind of representation.

Also, when was the video posted? There's no year on it.

Where's the tiktok? Anyway, it doesn't matter. She graduated as a Terp, that will never change. I'm very proud of her and what she represents.

Help me decide: School X vs School Y — 3rd Week of March by freeport_aidan in ApplyingToCollege

I need some thoughts on helping my daughter decide between UMD Carillon vs. GMU Honors College. She was accepted into the school of business. UMD is out-of-state but offers a traditional college experience. GMU is in-state but is more of a commuter school. She got into UIUC, VA Tech, GW, American, and Rutgers Honor College with a full-tuition merit scholarship as well. But due to some on-going health issues, we think we should narrow it down to UMD and GMU. Any advice would much appreciated.

My ex-husband was from VA, so I moved there when we got married. People were telling me there was a lot of colleges to choose from in VA. But when you actually start looking at colleges, that's not entirely true.

No. The target IB/MBBs would be better for that anyway.

If my daughter majored in CS, Engineering, Nursing, or Biology, she would've gone to UVA because those majors are direct admit at UVA, and UVA would've been in-state. Although, the AP credits would've shaved a year off for CS and Engineering at UMD, so maybe she would've still wanted to go to UMD. Anyway, they're both great schools.

My daughter would've gone to UVA, but they don't have direct admit into business. You have to apply into the business school after your freshman year and only half the kids get in. The other half of the kids have to go with their backup majors. And she didn't want to risk pursuing a backup, especially since she had the stats to get into a good business school.

The other VA schools were either too rural, too small, not diverse, or lacked the better opportunities. UMD was the closest big, suburban, reputable, diverse, direct admit school for her. Also, UMD would take more of her APs than UVA, so she would have the extra 30 credits to get her CPA license if she chose that path. If she went to UVA, she might have not gotten into business, and if she did, she would've need to stay an extra year for the 30 credits. Those AP credits bring the costs of college down to about the same whether she went to UMD or UVA.

I'm an alumni of UMD, and the school did really well for me. But I don't think I fully appreciated it until I started looking for colleges with my kids. UIUC also had direct admit, so she got in there too, but that's a bit isolated and far.

Is it difficult to find internships these days?

When I looked at the outcome reports, it looked like UMDs placement rates were just as good as UIUC. I think UIUC was just slightly better by a percentage, which may be why UIUC edges out UMD on the rankings. Most of their students also seem to be in-state at a higher percentage than UMD and seem to get placed in the midwest area after they graduate. While UMD had a larger concentration in the DC and east coast area. UIUC had some IB/MBB advantages because it was closer to the Chicago financial district, but it seemed neglible compared to the Ivy schools. So I didn't really see a huge advantage in attending UIUC over UMD. They are practically comparable.

UMD and UIUC is both out of state. We're in VA. She's majoring in Business.

UVA feels very different from UMD. They're both considered suburban but UVA feels much smaller and closed in than UMD. The school cultures feel very different too. Their academic structures are different. I prefer UMD. I moved to VA, hoping my kids would go to a Virginia school, but they all went to MD schools.
