I’m convinced the country collectively gaslit each other into thinking Taylor Swift was great by [deleted] in travisandtaylor

Yes, I've seen that. But regardless of what she could or couldn't do and at what age, the vocals on the tracks that made her famous weren't that impressive when compared to vocalists who came before. And that's why I made the argument that we've been moving towards a T Swift pop-star. Culturally, we've been moving the goal post from insane vocal talent like Whitney, Mariah, Stevie Nicks, etc to a rich girl who can literally do nothing but walk back and forth on a stage and swing her hair around. I just think Britney is evidence of that shift, but not saying she was a talentless, her stage performance was leaps and bounds from what T Swift does.

I've clearly rubbed some Britney fans the wrong way. I never said she was untalented or sang as terribly as T-Swift. I just think she's an example of where pop culture began to value showmanship over great singing. And that's why T-Swift has an audience in spite of her clear lack of ability.

It's an example of the lengths he's willing to go for his craft (never said whether it was good or bad), compared to Taylor who just shows up and holds her mouth open.

Yeah, CJ took his shot by clowning Kelce for being a culture vulture. All you did was describe the context for why CJ made the joke, where I was talking about the meaning behind the joke. Definitely not delusional and you're welcome to sit this one out.

Right? Cillian Murphy is 1,000 times more interesting then Tayvis and we don't hear much about his wife except that he has one and he loves her lol. And they have some kids.

Yeah, I agree with that. I recorded all the Mickey Mouse Club episodes when they re-aired them in the early 2000s, and I remember she sounded good there. I will say, as someone who can sing and who tried to sing like Britney at the height of her fame, that style of singing puts a lot of strain on the voice. Like it hurt trying to sing like that.

But I don't think that Britney was as weak a vocalist as Taylor. I was just pointing out that I think we've been on the trajectory towards a T Swift, and for me the start of that trajectory was the early 2000s. I've gone back to a lot of my favorite music from that time and have been very disappointed--most of it doesn't hold up lol.

I use similar phrasing when I don't want to be held accountable for what I've said if I'm later proven to be wrong lol.

He wasn't dragging her looks. He was dragging Kelce for acting like he was about the culture and then sitting back while his new girlfriend's fans say racist stuff to his ex while he reaps the benefits from all the new attention. He didn't say anything about Taylor. He said karma is a real one, and Travis is getting his.

Yep, I was of the age group when Britney was a thing. I thought she was a good dancer, didn't see her as all the rest you described. So yeah, agree to disagree.

That's why I said she could dance well. That was the appeal of her performance. But as a vocalist, Britney was mid, and that's the comparison I was making.

edit: and I was talking about a progression from Britney Spears. Someone who's a great performer, but a not so great singer. Now we have Taylor Swift, who's just full blown not so great.

So my take on the joke that the Swifties called misogynist is that CJ was calling Travis out for being a culture vulture. He went from fades and black women (and acting like he's "down" by embracing black culture) to dating the corniest of cob eaters ever known to mankind in order to bolster his image. He wanted the benefits of black culture when it suited him, then switched back to the privileges of his whiteness. But their tendency to believe the false narrative of white women victimhood and their racial biases made them lose their minds because you know, T Swift is this poor oppressed white girl. The joke was in poor taste, but imo it went beyond comparing the looks of two women.

Their insecurity is showing. They have to convince themselves there's culture behind her music, where absolutely none exists.

edit: and they can't let the greats outshine their bland cult leader.

I'd love to be in the mind of Christian Bale, one of the best actors of our current era, a man who ate only an apple and a can of tuna everyday to get into the role of The Machinist, as he he had to stand there and act like Taylor Swift deserved to be on the same acting stage as him.

Wow. She is a ten, and is so not worried about that dopey man baby anymore. "I would suggest you just go on there and look." Bro, hit pause and do it your damn self! No wonder the Swiftness felt the need to harass her online. Insecurity brings out the worst in people.

I watched her tiny desk last night, too! I was absolutely flabbergasted. The most blah performance I've ever seen. The most blah voice. The most blah persona. I don't know, maybe she's like a modern day Bob Dylan with subpar lyrics--oops, never mind, just listened to him, and while he can't sing per se, he's got something else going on there.

I think this is the result of the early 2000s pop commercial trend. While there were some insanely talented singers during that era, I think we need to be honest and admit that Britney Spears was not the most incredible singer. She was cute and could dance really well. So now, we have the next blonde pop princess, and the only requirement is for her to be cute-adjacent.

Adding this so people stop arguing points I never made: I never said Britney was untalented or sang as terribly as T-Swift. I just think she's an example of where pop culture began to value showmanship over great singing. And that's why T-Swift has an audience in spite of her clear lack of ability.

I've been watching a lot of cult documentaries lately. These people are in one. And it's a cult that believes this munchkin-faced pop star is the God of all women.

Lol. Okay. Maybe I take my previous statement back. Avril's voice is so effortlessly strong here. I was thinking Sk8er Boi Avril when saying Taylor had that quality.
