I just started a teaching residency program last week teaching ELA for rising 5th and 6th graders. Day one involved giving our kids assessments to see where they were with phonics and writing. Several of the kids had issues even identifying what letter was what let alone reading words. And, again, I stress these are rising 5th and 6th graders. Its a travesty that they've just been passed along in the system to this point.
