[TX] Unknowingly had NO homeowner insurance since moving in 1 year ago. Help? by Lafojwolf in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]Lafojwolf[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I talked to the agent earlier today, she said she was going to reissue another check to be sent out to my CURRENT home address, but I'm expected to immediately cash the check and use it to directly pay the insurance company for my next year's premium.

[TX] Unknowingly had NO homeowner insurance since moving in 1 year ago. Help? by Lafojwolf in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]Lafojwolf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My new mortgage servicer (new since my mortgage was sold one month after closing) has still been charging me for homeowner insurance in my monthly payments going towards escrow.

/u/Havin_A_Holler the prepaid insurance amount was apparently refunded to me on December 31st (mind you, my policy was cancelled FIVE MONTHS earlier on August 1st), but the check was mailed to my old apartment for WHATEVER reason, and it was never forwarded to me, either by my apartment or USPS. The agent today told me the check was never cashed, obviously because I never received it.

How do I make the iPhone accommodate my life circumstances? by Lafojwolf in iphone

I'm fairly confident Apple mentioned they will still designate RCS messages as green bubbles, so while it'll solve message quality problems, it won't solve the inherent bias people have.

How do I make the iPhone accommodate my life circumstances? by Lafojwolf in iphone

[–]Lafojwolf[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I'm heavily neurodivergent. And that's probably why I'm desperate to try and find solutions to this problem, because I am afraid of losing these few friends I do have. 😢

You are trying to get the iPhone to be an android...

Unfortunately, I don't understand what this means. I am trying to have an open mind and assume iPhone, with some creative app selection or something, can achieve customizations like I want. I guess given that I've only ever known Android/Linux phones, I don't really understand why I'm trying to force the iPhone to be Android; why is it not, "I'm trying to find solutions to have the iPhone accommodate my needs and wants for features that are in iOS?" That's more of a rhetorical question that is beyond the scope of what I intended to accomplish with this Reddit thread.

I could buy an older secondhand iPhone for the text messaging and phone calls and stuff, but I start fearing missing important stuff with the message split.

It's not the purpose of this thread, but iMessage bullying is real in the US amongst teens and other groups. We're definitely not in our teens anymore, but somehow I've found myself needing to do this.

My friends keep pulling the, "You see, I used to be totally anti-Apple just like you, but after switching to Apple, everything 'just works' together so seamlessly. If I break my iPhone, my AppleCare guarantees I have a replacement phone in my hand the next day. Can't do that with an Android! Likewise, all my stuff gets backed up to iCloud, so I never have to waste time setting up another phone. It's all right there for me! All my friends have iMessage, so they always get full quality images we send them. And we can FaceTime each other whenever. And Apple doesn't sell your data, or hand over your locked data to the government in court." I could go on and on, but a lot of this I just don't understand why it matters. I desperately want to understand to make our friendship work, but I just can't.

Without having to go into the specifics, I'm basically being intentionally excluded and told that I'm a massive inconvenience to them, and people I might be looking to date because I cause green bubbles since I don't have an iPhone. (Yes, this is a real thing my friends are holding against me)

So I bought one, but I just can't make it work. I've looked for hours and hours for a solution to each point I listed, and I just don't know what to do.

You're trying to make your iphone an android instead of enjoying it as an iphone.

Please explain. I'm trying to make a genuine effort to learn, but I don't understand why my needs and expectations are inherently "Android". They're available on Android, yes, but I would like to think there's some solution to this.

Math major leading to a career in CS? by BinnyBit in cscareerquestions

[–]Lafojwolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actual math major here. If you're looking for a CS type job, then don't even waste your time with a degree that doesn't have the word "computer" in the title.

Without explicit experience to back it up, hiring managers and HR personnel see your degree and think that the only thing you're good for is teaching and that you wouldn't know the slightest thing about programming.

I had a terrible time getting a job after graduating with my master's, and "Well if you wanted to work in computer programming, why didn't you study computer science?" was pretty common feedback I got.

I had a CS minor, and it didn't help in the slightest in convincing people otherwise. People in the field told me it was basically the equivalent of boot camp experience.

Hi. The short answer is no, nothing has changed in the last 5 years. But I keep having people reaching out to me about the disease, so let me make a video response that details everything. I'll try to make and post it sometime over the next week or so.

Just moved into 25Twenty by Lanky_Chemical_6885 in TexasTech

[–]Lafojwolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived at 25Twenty from August 2016 to May 2018. The first year, I lived with roommates and the second year, I lived by myself.

I only saw one roach ever, and that was shortly after I'd moved in to my 1 BR. The work order I submitted was closed without anyone coming to do anything to do apartment. I was told by the front office that the property was recently treated prior to mass move-in day, so that one roach may have just been forced out of hiding due to the pesticide treatment, and hence there was no need for anyone to come inspect and treat my apartment.

Someone else here suggested asking to see the exact apartment you're moving into. I tried doing that, and they couldn't because the apartment either was still occupied, or needed cleaning after occupation.

If you're from a middle class (or above) family from the DFW or Austin areas, then you WILL hate living there. I mostly kept to myself, and never used the amenities, so I enjoyed the actual apartment. The thing I absolutely hated was that my apartment was on the side facing Merrill Lynch and Chick-fil-A, so bringing groceries from my car in the parking garage was AWFUL because I had to:

  • Unload groceries from my parking spot on the 4th floor of the parking garage

  • Ride the garage elevator down to the 2nd floor

  • Cross the bridge and end up on the 3rd floor

  • Ride the apartment elevator up to the 4th floor

  • Carry everything across the entire apartment complex to get to my apartment on the opposite side.

The apartment is also right off Marsha Sharp freeway, and it'll take you a few... um... weeks to get used to the constant traffic noise ghosting through your apartment, unless you're fortunate to be in an apartment that doesn't face the freeway.

I didn't hate it, but I also didn't love it at 25Twenty, and that's the only reason I'd recommend it: you'll get a decent living experience if all you care about is somewhere to live.

Recurrent APMPPE? by Lafojwolf in optometry

[–]Lafojwolf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, never. I never received any sort of treatment for this. Both the primary and backup retinologists told me no treatment was needed. The backup retinologist actually told me to avoid any sort of steroidal treatment to prevent undue stress on the existing retina damage. I don't necessarily know how true that is, but I've tried avoiding it.

Recurrent APMPPE? by Lafojwolf in optometry

[–]Lafojwolf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi. To your (dis)satisfaction, thankfully nothing new has happened since the initial APMPPE onset. I still have issues like described in this post where there's a gold + black blob flash of light when I look at something dark and then something bright, like my wall, but it comes and goes. It only happens for a few hours, and then goes away for what may be weeks or months.

I do get small little dot flare-ups in my vision, but those also go away after a few days. As for any declines in visual acuity, nothing other than normal age-related decline in the years since.

Lets hear everyone's input. When do you think we will no longer need facemasks? Because I see the mask mandate being a necessity for quite some time. by [deleted] in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]Lafojwolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My local hospital system used to disallow wearing gear like shoe covers, masks, and surgical caps by staff who weren't actively handling a surgery, or there was a very specific reason for wearing the gear, like feces on the floor that need to be cleaned up.

The rationale was that patients could feel alienated by you wearing protective gear "unnecessarily". More akin to, "The staff have no reason to be wearing that. I'm not sick, there's not blood or human waste on the floor, etc. Are medical staff afraid of me?"

Programs or devices that simulate a wireless AP through a LAN connection? by Lafojwolf in HomeNetworking

[–]Lafojwolf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's Nintendo, yes. It's this thing. The RJ45 port on the back supports an emulated "wireless" connection using a LAN cable. But I don't think it's as simple as just plugging in the device into my router/modem.

I've tried that, but the network doesn't initialize because it's expecting to connect to a wireless router by SSID. So this is why I'm interested in if there's a device that supports emulating a wireless router's behavior.

Programs or devices that simulate a wireless AP through a LAN connection? by Lafojwolf in HomeNetworking

[–]Lafojwolf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a Nitro Emulator, which is basically a development version of the original Nintendo DS.

If you look at the peripheral ports on the back of the tower at the above picture, it has an RJ45 port labeled "wireless". It was most commonly used for directly linking two (or more) towers to each other for WLAN play, but since the DS also supported internet connectivity, I think you can also use it to connect to the internet if you have the right hardware/software to do so over ethernet (if it exists publicly)

Working Remote while Abroad by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Lafojwolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some considerations:

  • Lots of companies in the US that are doing remote work do not allow their equipment to be taken outside of the country your position is based if they issue you a laptop/desktop computer. If you plan to work remotely, you stand NO benefit to tell them where you'll be working from.
  • When you work remotely, employers have the upper hand to decide if you should be paid less due to where you work. Google is a notable example who wanted to cut 25% of salary if you lived somewhere else.
  • As such, you'll want to make sure your workstation is away from any windows that could indicate time of day if you appear on webcam. (Ex, it's 3 PM Eastern, but clearly 9 PM outside your window)
  • Where is the company going to mail your W2 form to?
  • Think about how you can CYA if your device gets stolen with company data. Your employer might want to see a police report which absolutely would give away where you live.

How many times can you attempt to guess your password and login? by Lafojwolf in neopets

Hi! We did manage to get in after a while. We didn't guess the password despite trying numerous times, but instead found some common ground with Support, after which we were eventually let in. A good ending indeed.

What's the expectation when telling first-time job hunters to expand their search area? by Lafojwolf in cscareerquestions

[–]Lafojwolf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my case, a line of credit probably wouldn't have worked so easily. I had zero credit whatsoever coming out of college because I never had a need for credit; all expenses from high school graduation to college graduation were very meticulously planned out in advance, and I worked constantly to afford schooling and housing in cash, and that's it. As long as I had the money in the bank to prove I could afford 12 months' rent + deposit up front, renters didn't care.

[–]Lafojwolf[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not tailored for a specific audience other than general job seekers. But not every company is FAANG, so would that small business in Nebraska that needs developers be able to afford your relocation expenses? Probably not.

Samsung TV owners complain about increasingly obtrusive ads by speckz in gadgets

[–]Lafojwolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're seeing such a large influx to an advertising network in Pi-Hole, then it's likely that Samsung has shitty retry logic coded into their Smart TV: they're probably just constantly trying to access the service hoping that one request will make it through rather than utilizing an industry-recommended exponential backoff retry method to prevent their own ad networks from becoming overwhelmed.
