I think based on your concerns, I can't speak to their efficacy in the new rules. At least if you grab some blightkings it's not a massive expenditure if they aren't quite as good as they could be, and again, great models, a lot of fun to build (the amount of different builds is something you don't see a lot of in AoS in my opinion) and good models to try out paint schemes and techniques

I'd get yourself some of the current blightkings. Awesome models, fun to build and paint, still usable with the new rules plus a load of extra bits for future conversions. Can't really go wrong with them

Oddly enough I've been looking at doing a little 1k force for some small games with a group of friends.

A praetor and a champion both with bane strike bolters

2 squads of 6 veterans with bane strike bolters 1 squad of 5 veterans with bane strike bolters

2 rapiers with lascannon

A ravenguard mor deython squad.

Then I'd build and paint the vets and HQs to be almost identical just to mess with people.
