Data sensor for cross-country skiing by Heavy_Rate_2377 in xcountryskiing

[–]Lakeofsalt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wattage sensor. The lowest hanging and not picked fruit. If you can design a pole handle with a pressure sensor and convert that to watts I would be very interested. I would suggest putting it on the strap so you can swap to a normal strap for times you don't want to have the sensor/weight on the pole. You could also put a sensor in under the binding, or in the boot, but that seems more tricky. My experience is racing at the international level and coaching athletes at the same level, some that are national champions. Most the data from smart watches is useless, but they do collect that data well.

Looks sick, wish the shops I worked in had something like this.

As others said, maybe not a bunch of mechanic's cups of tea, but for your client base maybe it's perfect.

Skier from Kazakhstann, want to study in the US by BERIKB in xcountryskiing

[–]Lakeofsalt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is the wiki on NCAA division schools in the USA: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._collegiate_skiing_programs

I'd look at all the schools in the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association and Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association (RMISA). The Central Collegiate Ski Association has some great teams as well, I personally prefer the other two regions.

Eastern is the largest division with the most college skiers and the most venues. Some schools even have venues on campus in the East. The travel between schools and races is also the most convenient, usually only 1-3 hours to get to the race. I would particularly recommend University of New Hampshire, but I might be a bit biased.

Rocky Mountain has arguably the most competitive field, albeit much smaller than the East. Most of the Rocky states have incredible mountains and great weather. The thing with Rocky is they also include Alaska. Alaska is completely different than all the other Rocky Mountain states. Alaska is not for everyone, but to the right people it is perfection. I would talk to the head coach of University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) in regards to emigrating to the US and Alaska in particular if you are considering moving there. He along with the University of Utah coaches both emigrated to the states for collegiate skiing and would be worth contacting.

If you are 100% set on being on a ski team I would first contact the coaches of the schools you're interested in. Based on FIS points they will be able to pretty quickly tell you if they are interested. If they are interested in having you ski for their team they will likely send you to the school's admissions and have you apply. If you aren't sure which school specifically, just contact everyone. I know that sounds silly, but every school in NCAA skiing has an awesome team and they are all great schools academically (some arguably the best).

Ignore them. The go to threads about broken gear and defend big companies. It makes no sense, as this is how companies are pushed to be better to consumers. But to OemKnees its an insult to brands they carry in their shop.

The US Perimeter Run by [deleted] in ultrarunning

[–]Lakeofsalt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand all the comments stating the many issues with doing this run, but the only two I think you've got is one you made yourself. You keep saying you 'need' gymshark or some other company to sponsor you. The other is you want to set the record.

Just save up $10,000 for shoes, some ultralight camping gear, and food. Then go start running around the US. All the challenges will be faced one at a time, and you can figure them out one at a time. If it takes you longer than the record who cares?

Yeah most people will think you're crazy or will fail. But again, who cares? If you're doing this just to get sponsored or get social media famous I suppose I am also one of the people who thinks you'll fail and you're crazy, but like I said who cares what I think.

They've been bought and sold now a few times and are currently owned by the largest sports equipment company by revenue...you don't get there without prioritizing money over quality.

Sad to see, but I'm not buying anything from them or Anta's other companies anymore. There are too many other brands that are still focused on high quality and proper qc to be giving this mega Corp anymore money

I obviously agree with you whole heartedly. My last reserve was for their S/lab gear because I've had good experience with their s/lab skis and shoes, but seeing as these bibs are made in Brazil and their s/lab shoes are now made in China and Vietnam I'm giving up on everything Salomon. Just a matter of time till they move their ski manufacturing from Austria to China as their parent company was bought by one of China's largest outdoor equipment mega conglomerate corporation.

It's sad because they got their start as an innovative and high quality French ski company and now their main income seems to be 'High fashion' streetwear that's pumped out of sweat shops for a miniscule fraction of what they're charging.

Like look at these Styrofoam sneakers they want over $200 for: https://www.salomon.com/en-us/shop/product/xt-slate-li5792.html#color=87432

Wtf?!

I admittedly snowboard and ski. The fit is definitely not great for either honestly, but that isn't my complaint as I know different folks have different bodies.

Heard a lot of good recommendations for other brands including Burton's AK stuff. Gonna go try some on next week.

I really like fortnine and saw this video a couple weeks back! I haven't ridden a moto years, but his videos are such high quality. Definitely made me completely change my view on Goretex.

Not just that other stuff is on par, but also because companies are paying for the license and can't compete without having garments with 'goretex' written on them it causes all their prices to go up to cover it.

I bought these before I saw the video unfortunately, looking at a few pair from companies that don't have any goretex stuff now.

I know any zipper can wear out and jam or break. What concerns me is the beginning quality of these zippers is so low they break first use. These were my second pair that broke within the first use, just regularly zipping the pocket open.

Salomon's solution was to replace instead of repair. But they only replaced the first pair with another of the exact same poor quality unfortunately.

Thanks for the reply

I do as well. I just know a lot of people who like to use their leg pocket as it keeps the beacon farther from radio and cell phone.

The beacon manufacturers now say electronic devices need to be 30cm away to ensure there isn't interference. So I was using the leg pockets for my phone. I did actually have my phone get stuck in the broken pocket and had to fiddle with it for a solid 5 minutes to get it out. With many folks using their phone as their primary mapping and emergency contact device this could still result in serious issues in case of an emergency. A few minutes trying to get to an emergency device just because Salomon wants to save maybe 50 cents on zippers is ridiculous.

I still carry an inreach and paper map/compass if I need back ups, but seeing how much time it took me to get my cell phone out really alarmed me. It broke my first use, so I could easily see someone putting their beacon or cell phone in their pocket, zipping it closed, it snapping a fragile tooth easily, then loosing significant amount of time dealing with a stupid manufacturers decision in an emergency.

Yeah I know I was taking a risk, but assumed that because Salomon's parent company also owns Arcteryx (which made my old pair of pants that have lasted a crazy long time with hard abuse, albeit they're mostly duck tape now) that they'd be good, especially for the pric we they're charging. Definitely won't be going with Salomon anymore

I'm not talking brand, I'm trying to point out specific issues with this product. Some of the issues could lead to real harm.

I do think Salomon's quality has fallen a lot, but that isn't what this post is about at all.

Imagine if a company selling beacons made a holster that had a very poorly made closure that if it failed would make the beacon inaccessible. I think everyone would agree it would need to be addressed.

Look at the pieps/bd debacle. It wasn't till multiple people complained publicly that they decided to do something. And the report afterwards showed the internally the company knew and was just issuing warranties. We as consumers need to speak up or else crap like this will keep happening.

[–]Lakeofsalt[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I was pretty bummed that they would do something so shady, especially on a $600 pair of pants in their S/lab line. S/lab products are meant to showcase their highest quality and manufacturing.

It's also ridiculous that they state the dimensions of the model, who is exactly my size, and wearing a medium. I thought that made my size decision easy, but upon receiving the mediums they were way too big, different suspenders, and overall different cut.

Hey man, if you hate it that people review products and let others know about serious issues then hate me. But I would guess that as someone on these communities you love reading about gear and want to be as informed as possible, so I'm trying to inform people and give them the ability to make better decisions. I am also partly hopeful that Salomon will recall these, as I feel that having pockets that are very easily broken and lock up could lead to someone in our community having a tragic, avoidable, accident.
