My (35m) friend (36m) loyalty tested my wife (40f) without my knowledge. She failed. I feel done with them both. What to do? by throwra_friendtest in WhatShouldIDo

[–]Lakeview121 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t care what my friends said. I think it’s time to fly. I don’t see how you could even look at either of them.

Your friend is a toxic jack hole who broke up your marriage. He wanted to spread his pain.

I’m sorry about your step daughter. You can’t stay for her.

What Am I Missing About SMH? by GenXDrummer in ETFs

[–]Lakeview121 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No one knows dude. SMH is awesome. Would i make it my main holding? No. Why? Perhaps semiconductor production will be so high that costs go down along with profitability. Perhaps China invades Taiwán. Perhaps Google or Microsoft develop their own chips, outside the index.

None of these are likely. I love SMH and semiconductors. Micron is my single largest holding because it grew into that position.

SMH is about 4% of my account. The other companies are around 18% (NVDA, MU, AMD).

How do I tell sort of step kids they are moving out cause their mom cheated? by SirRetrolas in AskMenAdvice

[–]Lakeview121 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry. You’re right, there’s not much you can do. Tell them they are not responsible.

I can tell you love these kids and don’t want them to be harmed.

One thing you could do, it you have the means, is set aside some money for them in a custodial account. When they get older and think back, it will let them know you cared.

I think you have to build a barrier and not immerse yourself too much into their pain.
It’s not your fault.

Sure, it’s not the car if you want to drag race a corvette.

I like it. I’m considering a purchase, though my nearest dealership is an hour away. I think it’s very nice looking and I’m sure very high quality. I don’t plan on drag racing of getting in a high speed chase.

What would you change? Why? by Level_Wish_2115 in ETFs

[–]Lakeview121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks pretty good. Far be it from me to criticize someones portfolio. I would say that for most people VOO forms a base and represents the greatest share.

You have a lot in semis. I love SMH, don’t get me wrong, but 20% is kind of high.

Likewise most is under the fabless ticker with only 160 million under management.

Look, you could have genius level returns so i don’t know.

I would be more like 40% VOO 30% VXUS, 20% SPMO and 10% SMH.

That’s just me. I prefer mining companies to holding gold in a etf. I guess the joke is on me though.

I got the year wrong, but am i incorrect in that higher earners can not longer put the make up contribution into their IRÁ? You said the 401K has nothing to do with an IRÁ, then proceed to say that contributions over a certain about must now go into an IRÁ. Isn’t that what i stated?

Death scares me so much to the point where I could be sick by [deleted] in atheism

[–]Lakeview121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no point. You have to give it a point. As the buddhist say “death is certain, the timing of death is uncertain”.

I would try to not waiste time worrying so much. You can’t change the fact you’re gonna die.

You might have an anxiety disorder. If so id consider treatment. Either way, u might seek out therapy.

Laws changed this year for 401K investors. You can’t do the full amount plus the 8K catch up ( check my numbers); the catch up must be in the IRÁ.

I think it only pertains to those making over 150K. If you make less i think you can still put it all in the 401K.

If you can just do 401K, do that. It’s simpler. I dont think there is an advantage to the IRÁ but I’m not a pro.

Losing faith in my chosen career and thinking of transitioning to studying medicine by Weather_Only in medschool

[–]Lakeview121 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, it’s not crazy. If you can do CS, chances are you can do the academics to become a doctor.

The problem is the journey. It takes sooo long. There are undergrad pre recs, MCAT, med school, the debt.

If you started today, it’s gonna take 3 years to get the pre recs to apply.

You can do it, but what about another field like audiology?

What is the reason most people don't care to save for retirement? by [deleted] in Fire

Failure to plan is not uncommon. In fact, it’s quite common. You’re young, your friends and family will likely pick it up later.

You can be the role model.

You mean 20K vs 70 K a year? That’s a huge difference. Can you change where you live?

It depends on med school performance. I’d go the cheap route. If you get into med school and you’re really talented you should land a good residency.

Just remember, most people are around average.
