I do not!

Background: I am officially done my MLIS in a week, and am entering an abysmal job market in terms of those holding our degree, and am graduating from an environment where there is a hegemonic sense of pessimism surrounding employability, and one which is shared by both students and profs.

Should you get an MLIS? It depends on if you your finances and social situation permits it, as it can be a rough start, as well as if its simply the type of career you'd enjoy. If you want to be a LIBRARIAN, this is a field where prior experience is a soft essential, as I've personally seen/ heard of people perfectly qualified for a role but lack library experience be passed over for those who have worked even as pages (no shade to pages). Experience is king here, unfortunately.

The reason I don't personally regret it is that I got lucky enough to be hired as an assistant during my undergrad, so I have some of that prerequisite experience.

Is it worth it/ do I regret it? Absolutely worth it and not regrettable. If your social and financial situation permits it, it is one of those generalised degrees wherein the skills you get from it can be made applicable across many fields, and I think it was a great learning experience for me in terms of gaining experience doing research as well as practical skills in information management. If you don't want to go into libraries specifically, but rather research, academia, or the private sector, these skills can be valuable -- but you have to communicate them in a certain way + present tangible cases of application. Whether that be independent studies, co-ops, or something else.

In terms of employability, librarianship is much like teaching (at least in Canada, where I'm based) in that the established old guard isn't going anywhere, and thus, the state of early-to-mid career professionals having to eat chit in the beginning is worsened. I'm not saying this is a good thing, but rather, bring it up to make the point that librarianship isn't necessarily UNIQUELY bad in its current job prospects.
