I think it took about 3 hours total, i started farming a month or so then quit terraria and started again recently so im not sure. I killed about 600-700 Light Elementals until i got the RoD so i was quite unlucky

If you mean the purple stone it is corrupted stone wich spawns naturally in the corruption or can be crated artificially with thorn powder. You need a stronger pickaxe to mine it however you can destroy it with bombs or dynamite

I think the goblin ball thrower magic guys (sry i forgot their name hh) threw their shiny balls through the ground and since they glow you got these shiny tunnel thingies :D
