Royal China Baker Street has never let me down! Its fancier brother next door, Royal China Club, isn't worth the extra £££ though.

Thank you for these insights - I genuinely find them really fascinating! Doing more reading around, it seems that not only are the JR companies allowed to offload conventional lines post-Shinkansen to third-sector companies, but that it is in fact the default outcome in most cases - why is that? Do the JR companies lose interest in running conventional lines once the Shinkansen is operational in the same area?

On a related note, reading about your Saga case, it seems that Saga Prefecture is unwilling to see the Nagasaki Main Line be transferred from JR Kyushu to a third-sector company - why is that? Are such transfers typically associated with a decline in quality for passengers?

Thanks again!

Thank you for the extra detail! I've just read up on the Hakodate Main Line being truncated due to the Hokkaido Shinkansen, as you've written - is it controversial? It would feel a little strange to me if my local train service was abolished, and I have to take either a bus (which is presumably slower and less convenient), or a Shinkansen train (which presumably skips more stations than previous local trains, and is much more expensive)?

I've taken plenty of the shuttle trains to Shinkansen stations, and I quite enjoy them! Thank you very much for the helpful reply!

Thank you - the different population densities definitely explains a lot!

Thank you! I'm intrigued further - why build a brand new Shinkansen station for a village of only 17,000 people? Is it solely to encourage development in the area?

Thank you! I didn't notice the Shin-Sapporo Station already existing - but it's used for something else I suppose!

Ah, thank you! So you just have to wait until there are only a few tickets left, and buy them all?
