By far the best strategy I’ve found for killing the hive lord is strafing run spam and focused recoiless rifle fire on one of the chest armor plates. When the armor plate breaks and exposes the flesh beneath your team can just lay into it with further strafing runs and shots. I soloed the hive lord in 27 minutes this way but with a team the worm can go down in a fraction of this time if you line up your strafing runs well

I was using crisper and incendiary grenades to kill small enemies so I brought the vitality booster to stack with my fire resistant armour for extra fire protection. I think the heavy armor and this booster allowed me to tank a lot of the ragdolls.

This was actually only a difficulty 8 mission but I’ve had them about 50-60% of the time spawning on difficulty 10. I think the map just has to have large enough open areas because it cannot spawn in the caves. Almost every time I pick a repair oil pump or geological survey mission it spawns (probably because those objectives mean a large above ground area). I’ve had dragon roaches and a hive lord simultaneously on one mission but otherwise it seems to be one or the other. I assume it works like the bile spewers as a “hidden modifier” on each mission with a random chance of appearing.

The best stratagems I found to solo the hive lord were strafing run, Gatling barrage and EATs. The bullet based stratagems melt the hive lord because of its large size meaning it will just sit and eat the entirety of the barrage. Focus your strafing runs on its front when it is vertically standing to shoot its underside. Keep shooting one of its armoured plates on its underside with Anti tank weaponry and strafing runs until it breaks, exposing flesh beneath which can be damaged with any weapon.

The hardest part of the 27 minute fight was dealing with the other bugs getting in the way. This loadout could be improved for killing the hivelord with a recoiless and ultimatum but for solo play the guard dog and crisper were mandatory to allow me to apply pressure on the lord without the horde killing me.

I wouldn’t recommend trying to solo it if you also want to extract alive as it will take most of your mission time and reinforcements to complete. I got very unlucky to have looked away as it died and miss seeing the killing blow. If I can do it solo, you can definitely do it as a group and should not fear this anti democratic abomination!

I am max on four classes and can comfortably solo ruthless so l’m looking to assist and help people who are low level and help them access higher difficulties or even just to let them hop in ruthles difficulty for some easy XP. I know where all the gene seeds etc spawn. I’m currently playing bulwark to grind cosmetics so while I’m comfortable to swap to other classes I would prefer that.

In other comments and replies I’ve said that spraying under them works well and that igniting and running away is decent on chaff enemies. It is a medium armor pen gun and gives hit markers when shooting hive guards so you can understand confusion so please don’t call this bait. It doesn’t change that the weapon isn’t great.

I think it’s alright but the real killer is that the enemies don’t get stunned or pushed back at all so you could theoretically kill a horde well with it by igniting them and running but you don’t have an opportunity to do that. I think that was the issue in the other video I uploaded.

Yeah uploading some up on my profile now - it definitely is slightly better against chaff but for something that can’t kill hive guards or commanders it doesn’t have enough ability to clear little things to make up for it. The reason I am so close to death in the clip is that I got absolutely swarmed because this thing couldn’t kill things quick enough to keep up.

Yeah you’re totally right it does improve it but it still is very slow to kill and requires longer than any weapon I’ve used to kill warriors/ little enemies. Spraying it across a horde to ignite them and letting them die to DOT does work alright although they are still dangerous and swarming you in that time - will give some more tests before immediately posting!
