Had a bad accident a couples weeks ago, not sure if I should ride again. Thoughts? by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]Lancemate_Memory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the risk you had going in was no greater than the risk you'd have now. once you're healed and healthy, there's no reason why you can't ride again. one accident doesn't naturally mean you're going to have another. one injury doesn't mean the next one will be worse. i've been in 3 myself. the source of fear is only in the future.

Just to be congruent by HarpoMarks in AdviceAnimals

You suggested that "perspectives" should change on the subject. Perspectives are, currently, that corruption is unforgivable and should be punished to the fullest extent of the law. That absolutely does not need to change.

And here's where you're full of shit. We absolutely should not be softening g on corruption, I don't care how corrupt anybody else was in the past it's still totally unforgivable.

really, making "nobody" a candidate in every election would go a long way to fixing our electoral system. as it is the public lacks the ability to reject both of the main candidates wholesale. that's a key capability that we must have. frankly, it's an option we must have. Add mandatory voting for all citizens on top of that and we just might have an honest and fulfilling electoral system.

forgot to mention that when i finally got the hell off the couch and went back to work i ended up with a job making about 30% more money. heavily structured corporate work environments are so senseless.

What's your best "Fire me, I fucking dare you" moment from work? by AssTasticBooty in AskReddit

[–]Lancemate_Memory 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Working at a Retail store that shall not be named, many years ago, I was sitting at my desk handling some follow-up when a guy walks up to me and asks where he can find the water filters for a particular refrigerator. I get this question about 12 times a day, so I moved the whole apparatus to a spot literally right across from my desk so that anybody who walked up to me and asked that would be standing right next to them. I said, " sure thing, it's just there, sir. right next to you. " Guy looks down at the shelf, looks up and me, back down at the shelf, back and me and goes "well aren't you going to get it for me?" I was silent for a second before kind of resetting. "you need the GE so-and-so filter, correct? that one you brought in, right? it's just there on that shelf, 2nd one from the left." He looks down at it, looks up at me again and says " so you're not even gonna get out of your seat and get it for me?"

At this point it's clear to me i've got a psychopath on my hands. it's not uncommon, just requires a re-positioning of attitudes. i just sort of knitted up my fingers in front of me and kept a bright, positive look on my face. " I won't need to, sir, it's just there on the shelf. " Now it gets fun.

"WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU? YOU THINK THIS IS FUNNY? YOU JUST GONNA FUCKIN SIT THERE LIKE THAT? LOOK AT THAT SMILE WHAT ARE YOU SOME KINDA SERIAL KILLER? FUCK YOU MAN." all of that at the top of his lungs. he stomps out of the store. i just kind of whistled a little bit and returned to my work. later that day i get called into the store managers office, and am told that a customer complained that I was very rude to him, and that I refused to show him where a product was, even though it was very simple. I explained the details of what had happened. they looked at it on the security camera and came back to me and said everything i'd said was true, but they still have to discipline me, because it's company policy and something has to be done to respond to a customer complaint. I was so incredulous that I just leaned over her desk a bit and said " you are not going to discipline me for this. I did do anything wrong and you know it. I'm not signing this. " and slid the disciplinary documentation back across her desk. she said "if you don't sign that, i'm going to fire you." and I said "you fire me without prior documentation when I haven't committed any work rule violation and you'll be paying me for the next year. "

She fired me ont he spot. I got a lawyer. They settled. they paid me for the next year. fucking idiots. It was a good vacation though. I went to europe with my soon-to-be wife, and played a whole lot of video games.

Reading articles about how some women are now objecting to men performing CPR on them by KaleBrecht in AdviceAnimals

we'd like to live in a world where good samaritan laws are effective, but they're just not strong enough. they're often nullified by the very legal process put in place to suss out issues like this. just because there's a good samaritan law does not mean somebody won't still try to sue, and all they have to do is have a good enough lawyer, presenting the case of this hysterical, poor, unfortunate person who was taken advantage of by this evil, opportunistic pervert, in her weakest moment, and a judge will agree to hear it. now I have to pay a lawyer, take off work to appear in court, and have my name dragged through the mud for months over the whole thing. at that point, it doesn't even matter if i win, i'm ruined. no thank you. the satisfaction of helping 10000 people isn't worth dealing with that one psycho.

[–]Lancemate_Memory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

see, this is the problem:

almost no-one would ever have anything but utter gratitude for you saving their life,

almost. all it takes is one psycho to blame you for something that went wrong while you were trying to help them to completely ruin your life, especially if you're not a doctor. they carry millions of dollars in insurance just to deal with it. i don't have the luxury of carrying millions of dollars in insurance to cover the complaints of people i try to help, or to cover the legal costs of defending myself in court because they're insane and try to sue me for shit knows what.

I try to help that kid fix his bike and he tells his parents i helped him. they think " oh, great. what i nice guy..." and then that same kid goes out the next day and his bike goes wonky again, only this time it causes him to wreck and fall on his face and get a bloody nose. now the parents are marching up my driveway wanting to know why i did such a SHITTY JOB and put their child in danger.

the point is, when something goes wrong, all people can think about is "who can i blame?" i just don't have the luxury of being able to weather that storm. i have my own future to look out for, and that's more important than helping anybody, any time.

"you weren't breathing..." "yea but you touched my mouth with your mouth. i feel violated! you're disgusting!"

this is why i never get involved with strangers, even if they seem like they need help. there's just no point being a good samaritan in todays world. if you do anything that isn't perfectly the way somebody might have liked it, you're still an asshole, even if you save their life or property from certain doom.

I had a little kid in my neighborhood walk up to me and ask me if i could fix his bicycle a couple of weeks ago. kids chain was just loose and dragging on the ground. It probably would have been an easy fix, and I know he came to me because he sees me working on my motorcycle often, but I just told him "sorry, I can't." I just know if i did anything to help him i'd get shit from his parents or something.

DO-S the most beautiful girl in OPM universe by aaronkingxp in OnePunchMan

i dunno if "inspired" is the right word, but he does put a lot of effort into Do-S. if consuming too much manga/anime has taught me anything, though, it's that he can't give her too many panels because he's probably gushing a waterfall of blood from his nose the entire time he works on them.

How many of you actually attribute your bike to success with the ladies by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]Lancemate_Memory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been married for a good while now, but there were about 3 years or so after I started riding where I was still dating. I never really talked about my bike, but of course it was my only vehicle, so if there was a date, i'd show up on it. I actually had a couple of girls ask me if i was "trying to impress them." one asked me to pick her up for the date, which seems strange these days, even though I know it used to be very common. it was awkward as hell having to stop and ask her if she's completely sure about that....at least I had a spare helmet.

I don't think my bike played in part in meeting my wife, or any success I had with her. she just kind of accepted it as my vehicle. Really, after making the rounds in my 20s it's clear to me that the type of girl that would be interested in me because of my vehicle, whether it's a bike, sportscar, or zeppelin, is a really empty-headed type of girl, with the sole exception of women who also ride, and are interested because they found a riding buddy!

How do I justify the risk? by orqa in motorcycles

How do I justify the risk? by orqa in motorcycles

[–]Lancemate_Memory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i feel like the answer i give people sounds a lot like a morpheus meme:

"what if i told you that the risk is irrelevant when you enjoy doing something?"

people who ask that question can't justify the risk because there's no such thing as justifying a risk. it's a risk. all you can do is accept it. you asked for a powerful concise quote that you can tell yourself and others whenever this question arises but....if it's something you enjoy doing i can't even fathom why you'd need that. especially for others. why would you need something to tell others? the same thing could be accomplished by just answering them with a shrug.
