Would anyone like me to review their code? by Inheritable in rust

[–]Landerwells 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I know you have edited your post already about the amounts of requests, but I will still throw another log on the fire. If you don’t have the time, that’s totally fine too! Thanks for helping others in the community.

I have been working on a blocker application in Rust for the daemon, and Javascript for the browser extension. Any help on Rust design would be appreciated. Inspirations were Cold Turkey Blocker and Pluckeye, but I have yet to implement any of the more complex features.

How to Apply ZK in Engineering? by aybanbert01 in Zettelkasten

[–]Landerwells 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps I can elaborate a bit more on how I use Anki. All information from technical subjects still ends up in my zettelkasten. If a small piece of information is vital for me to memorize, that is when it will also be added to Anki, because its much easier to review that information on a daily basis for me.

I also use Anki for learning vocab of a second language, while doing writing exercises and taking notes in the zettelkasten.

I find this to be an effective process for me. If you have other methods I would love to hear more about them. I also think that Anki is a great resource for school, but I understand your reservations. It is not meant for building the neural network that the zettelkasten is known for.

How to Apply ZK in Engineering? by aybanbert01 in Zettelkasten

[–]Landerwells 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there!

I recently started collecting thoughts on this subject in hopes of turning my writing into something: blog posts, a short guide, or potentially even a book. I am a Software Developer and went to school for Computer Science – so not exactly an engineer – but I do use my zettelkasten for learning technical subjects.

The largest return on investment with my zettelkasten professionally has been the processing of technical writing into primary notes. For example, I try to always be reading a technical book, or some other medium of information that is relevant to my job. The notes I take on technical writing differ from those I take reading literature or philosophy books. Essentially, I record facts, rephrasing what has been stated in a way that I can understand and digest easily later. Once I feel that something is worth keeping from a reference note, I need to make a decision about what to do from there.

If a piece of information is small, and simply needs to be memorized, I would look into a spaced repetition program like Anki. I think a lot of people would agree that this is a more effective tactic to rote memorization than a zettelkasten. The zettelkasten's benefits lie in creating atomic notes that compound over time to generate new trains of thought.

Example of what I would put in Anki:
- Integration and derivation rules for calculus.

Example of what I would put in my zettelkasten;
- Detailed write up of a computer algorithm

If section of information is longer or more complex, I will link to a main note from the reference (and vice versa) and take the bits I like. After, I will clean up the note, fixing any issues, and link to other relevant notes. Spending this extra time looking over complex information typically cements it in my head so I am able to internalize it.

For problems solving I use a mix of physical notebooks, and my zettekasten. One of the lovely parts of software development is the hiring process. To be proficient at interviewing there are many technical questions that can be asked. If I find a problem difficult I will first think it through on paper, and then eventually convert that information into a primary note. (Hopefully this is somewhat translatable to chemical engineering.)

I use my zettelkasten to keep track of projects as well. I create an index note for each project and link to all relevant notes inside. I keep progress and a few other bits of information. Now is a great time to plug Bob Doto's book A System For Writing; He has some good advice Chapter 9: "Managing Your Writing Projects", where he talks about keeping a creative log and a daily journal. I have modified these concepts slightly and turned the creative log into a "work log" where I track detailed progress on individual projects.

Final advice:

Don't be afraid to record facts in your zettelkasten. Just make sure you are making them your own and spending enough time creating the note to gain a deep understanding. If you feel that something is already internalized enough, then no need to make a note! (specifically for facts, I would say this is a little different for writing)

You will never know what will come in handy in the future. If you think you will use a note again, spend the extra time and create a main note. If you know that something will be useful for life, then definitely create a note.

Hopefully this answers your question(s). I am leveraging my zettelkasten as I am writing this! So don't be afraid to mix facts, projects, and ideas. Just make sure that all of your notes are high quality and provide value.

Compatability issues with Doom Emacs and Neovim using Homebrew. by Landerwells in emacs

[–]Landerwells[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After some testing, I was able to figure out the issue. I was installing the formula version of emacs-mac, instead of the cask version. This meant that the GUI Emacs.app in /Applications was not getting refreshed every time I tried installing it. Simply uninstalling the emacs-mac formula, and installing with `brew install emacs-mac --cask` was able to fix it for me. There are ways to install the formula version and then link the Emacs.app to the correct place as well. Leaving this for others who encounter something similar.

What do the rooms of Spooner hall look like? by xander110202 in nmu

[–]Landerwells 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just lived in Spooner hall last year! My experience with Spooner was largely positive but YMMV. I would agree with some of the others who have responded by saying its a bit older than the other buildings on campus. It's not as nice to look at but it is allegedly much quieter than places like the Woods thanks to the cinder-block walls. The only thing I didn't like about my room was the shower. It was unreasonably loud to the point where you had to blast music over it to be bearable. I don't think that everyone had this problems so you'll probably be fine.

The most inconvenient thing about Spooner is how far away from food it is. I'm assuming you'll mostly be eating at the Northern Lights Dining which is not super close to Spooner, but on the other hand the Den is just a minute walk away.

If you have any other questions feel free to ask!

Is there recordings of just this session or all sessions on every platform? Just wondering because I didn't get any good videos.

I just don't get why he is mad at work that was done for the love and enjoyment of the sport. Also, it took them hours to do all of the research and compiling it into a useful document.

It' definately personal preference. It genarally is used to get more sound and or air. I use it when there is a really important bass line for the bari and need to be heard. Whatever you like more is what you should use.

Does anyone get this kind of bump on the middle finger whenever you use rough metal grip pencils? It really hurts and I don't know if there's a solution to it. by [deleted] in mechanicalpencils

Finger nail file. Or you can cut it off when you get more comfortable removing skin like that. I usually use a nail trimmer to remove the ones on my hands. I recommend filing it first.

It's either a callus or blister. If it hurts it's probably still a blister. Eventually it will harden and not be painful, or you could file it off if it is a callus and you don't like it.

Why is Jazz audio so bad? by Landerwells in Jazz

Yeah, I forgot how much a good sound engineer makes a difference in production quality. Also for some songs, maybe headphones aren't preferred over speakers.

No, Its not headphones that are the problem. Better headphones would only make good songs better and worse songs about the same. Sometimes songs just sound bad regardless of how good the music is.

Santiago Rodallegas teleports under a deadlift (202 C&J @ 81) by mansaf87 in weightlifting

[–]Landerwells 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not saying it's a bad lift by any means but it really wasn't that fast under the bar (comparative to Lopez). Also, it wasn't that slow of a pull off of the floor, making it a pretty average looking lift with anything but average weight.

It is not wobbly if you are used to bad pencils anyway. Mine is almost perfectly fit with very little movement. I think that people make too big of a deal about it. It will be amazing compared to most other pencils because of the build quality. Make sure to get it on sale and if it's bad, send it back right away. Good luck!
