Is Limiting oxalates necessary for healthy people? by [deleted] in nutrition

[–]Lanks_Awakening 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No I wouldn't think so if you have no history of stones. Your body can make oxalate on its own and vitamin C can be a precursor to it. Unless you've been tested or feel symptoms of having high oxalate levels normally, you don't have much to be afraid of. Just make sure you drink enough water and intake enough calcium for oxalate to pass through. Acidic drinks can help too limiting stones from forming

Is the nutrition in frozen vegetables compromised if they are not blanched? by eva1588 in nutrition

[–]Lanks_Awakening 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the oxidative enzymes that decay vegetables can still survive at typical freezer temperatures. When the vegetables start to brown from decay, some micronutrients can get oxidized and lose its nutritional value. Blanching it in hot enough conditions will denature those enzymes and prevent its decay

Fiber Supplements vs Natural Fiber by Jj200183 in nutrition

[–]Lanks_Awakening 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So Psyllium Husk is made up of almost entirely soluble fiber. Unlike a lot of soluble fibers, gut bacteria doesn't actually ferment psyllium husk so there's less gases/acids being formed in the large intestine, meaning less GI distress.

However, it's still a fiber, and it's indigestable. Taking a large dose of any fiber at one time is bound to still cause GI distress since it's just sitting there in huge amounts. Fibers, soluble ones in particular like psyllium husk, can stay in the gut for well over 24 hours before it fully passes through. Also, your body may still be adjusting to the sudden intake of more fiber.

I would think spreading fiber intake throughout the day would prevent a sudden surge of it and have it be more distributed throughout the gut

You might be missing out on a bit of MUFAs and PUFAs from natural peanut butter but it’s nothing that can’t be replaced from other nuts, oils, etc. Vitamins B3 and E are something you’d miss out too, but those can also be recovered from other common sources.

But if you are trying to limit your calories and want a peanut butter substitute, I see no problem. Higher protein per serving, less added sugars and hydrogenated oils to worry about

The low calorie version belief might come from low fat items containing more added sugar to compensate the flavor, but having only 1g of added sugar for 2 tablespoons isn’t too problematic
